The 40-day 2024 Spring Festival travel season concluded on March 5, with China Eastern Airlines and its affiliates, Shanghai Airlines and China United Airlines, successfully operating 106,800 flights and transporting close to 16.5 million passengers. These flights maintained an impressive average occupancy rate of over 82%.

During the travel surge, China Eastern Airlines reported daily transportation of approximately 412,400 passengers, reaching its zenith between February 14 and 16 when daily passenger counts soared above 480,000.

Positioned as Shanghai’s premier airline, China Eastern was instrumental in managing more than 44,000 flights at both Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport, aiding over 6.85 million passengers. This figure includes in excess of 530,000 travelers in transit and more than 4,000 solo minors.

This year’s Spring Festival saw a notable trend towards international travel, particularly driven by the introduction of visa exemptions, with flights to Southeast Asia and between China and Italy drawing significant interest.

Following the visa policy changes, destinations like Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand experienced a surge in arrivals.

In the year’s initial months, flights to Malaysia by China Eastern Airlines boasted an average fill rate of 82.7%, while the Italy-China route witnessed a remarkable 62% growth in passenger numbers compared to the previous year.

Additionally, China Eastern Airlines highlighted its cutting-edge “full-journey online” in-flight Wi-Fi service, which reached peak usage during the travel season. Over the period, the Wi-Fi service was available on 10,787 flights aboard wide-body aircraft, benefiting more than 540,000 users.
