Upon their arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (Terminal 1) from Kunming, China, passengers on flight MU9629 were greeted by Mr. Manoharan Periasamy, the Director General of Tourism Malaysia, alongside officials from China Eastern Airlines and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

The inauguration of China Eastern Airlines’ daily service connecting Kunming and Kuala Lumpur, utilizing the Airbus A320neo with a capacity for 148 passengers, supplements the existing 18 weekly flights from Yunnan Province in southwest China.

“With this new additional route, it is a great opportunity to bring in more tourists from China’s second-tier cities, especially now with our visa-free policy for Chinese travellers to Malaysia. We continue to amplify our promotional efforts in showcasing Malaysia’s rich heritage and warm hospitality to one of our top markets through Tourism Malaysia’s overseas offices in China,” said Mr. Manoharan.

The visa exemption for Chinese tourists, effective from December 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, has contributed to a substantial rise in travel bookings to Malaysia. In 2023, Malaysia saw an impressive 593.4% increase in Chinese tourists, with 1.47 million arrivals, compared to 212,603 during the same timeframe in 2022.
