In the first quarter of 2024, China’s aviation sector experienced a remarkable surge in air passenger traffic, setting new records thanks to robust domestic demand and strategic governmental initiatives aimed at revitalizing the tourism industry. This uptick is especially notable following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions and coincides with the country’s most significant festive season, the Lunar New Year.

Boosted by New Year Celebrations
The Lunar New Year, falling in February this year, is a peak time for travel in China as millions of people travel to their hometowns for family reunions. According to data from the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), reported by CCTV, nearly 83.5 million air trips were made during the 40-day holiday period. This figure represents a 51% increase from 2023 and a 14.5% rise from the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.

Record-Breaking Quarter
Overall, the first quarter saw almost 180 million air passenger trips, marking a year-on-year growth of 37.7% and establishing a new high for quarterly air travel in China. This growth not only reflects a rebound from the subdued travel activity in early 2023, when China was just emerging from stringent COVID-related restrictions, but it also shows a significant recovery from pre-pandemic figures, with a 10.2% increase compared to the same period in 2019.

Domestic and International Travel Insights
The bulk of the air travel comprised domestic routes, which accounted for 160 million trips, up 14.3% from 2019 levels. International travel has also begun to bounce back, with 14.1 million trips constituting 78% of the volume seen in 2019. The regional routes, including destinations like Hong Kong and Macau, made up the remainder of the traffic.

Performance of Major Carriers
The resurgence in air travel is further evidenced by the performance data of China’s major airlines. Air China Ltd., for example, reported a 50% increase in passenger traffic for March, while China Southern Airlines Co. achieved an 82.3% passenger load factor, the highest among its peers, with a 36.1% rise in passenger traffic.

Industry Outlook
Despite a slight deceleration in growth rates post-February, attributed to the high travel volumes during the Lunar New Year, the outlook for China’s aviation sector remains positive. Industry analysts, like Tim Bacchus of Bloomberg Intelligence, suggest that while the surge in February set a high bar, the continued growth trajectory indicates strong underlying demand for air travel within and outside of China.

Strategic Implications
The record levels of air passenger traffic are a clear indication of the efficacy of governmental efforts to rejuvenate the travel sector, a key component of the country’s broader economic strategy. The resurgence in travel demand not only bodes well for the aviation industry but also signals a positive trend for related sectors such as hospitality and retail, which benefit from increased tourism and business travel activities.

As China’s aviation sector flies past previous records, the trajectory suggests a robust recovery and a promising year ahead for the travel industry. With strategic measures in place and a strong demand from consumers, the sector is poised to continue its ascent, contributing significantly to the broader economic landscape.
