The citizenM Menlo Park Hotel, an iconic establishment developed by the renowned boutique hotel chain citizenM, has recently opened its doors in California’s Silicon Valley. The hotel, strategically located in the heart of the US high-tech hub, near the headquarters of Google, Meta, Apple, and Stanford University, boasts 240 modular guest rooms. The modules, provided by CIMC Modular Building Holding Company Limited (“CIMC MBS”), were manufactured in China, shipped to the United States, and assembled on-site like LEGO blocks a year ago.

Designed to meet stringent seismic requirements, the hotel relies entirely on the structural integrity of its modules to withstand seismic forces in the region without any compromise. The 5-story structure comprises 161 modules, housing a total of 240 intelligently managed guest rooms. Equipped with a state-of-the-art room management system, guests can control various amenities, including TV, heating, air conditioning, shades, and lights using tablet computers or the citizenM APP.

Given the hotel’s location in California’s seismic zone, CIMC MBS collaborated extensively with local structural consultants and drew upon the success of their previous high-rise modular building project, the citizenM DTLA Hotel in Los Angeles. The design team optimized the volumetric steel structure system to ensure the hotel’s resilience to seismic forces.

In addressing the challenges posed by the curtain wall windows, the design team, leveraging previous modular case studies and project-specific considerations, obtained certification from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) in the United States. The modules themselves, with a seismic design intensity level of E, play a crucial role in resisting seismic forces, aligning with the heightened seismic design regulations in the USA.

Throughout the construction process, CIMC MBS maintained a collaborative approach with the client, integrating various professional disciplines. Utilizing digital project management tools and lean improvement processes, the construction period of the citizenM Menlo Park Hotel was significantly shorter than the citizenM DTLA project, with enhanced product quality.

Environmental sustainability was a key focus, with the hotel designed and constructed in accordance with US LEED Certification – gold level requirements. Over 90% of the fit-out and decoration process occurred in the factory, significantly reducing material wastage and carbon emissions. The modular construction approach also minimized the impact of noise and dust on the surrounding communities and the environment.

CIMC MBS, having successfully delivered numerous projects in California, including the world’s first high-rise modular building in a high seismic intensity area, remains committed to leveraging Chinese advantages for global business development. Victor Zhu, the General Manager of CIMC MBS, emphasized the company’s dedication to social responsibility and sustainable development in the industry and society at large. Looking ahead, CIMC MBS aims to foster win-win cooperation and contribute to the sustainable development of North America and beyond.
