The devastating earthquake that struck central Morocco- the strongest earthquake ever in the history of the country, has left a trail of destruction, with the latest figures from the Moroccan Interior Ministry reporting a grim death toll of at least 2,122 people. The earthquake, which occurred on a Friday night, has also resulted in 2,421 individuals sustaining injuries.

The affected regions are grappling with the aftermath of this catastrophe, with the Al Haouz Province being the hardest-hit, accounting for 1,351 casualties, followed by 492 in Taroudant Province, 201 in Chichaoua, and 17 in Marrakesh.

The magnitude of this disaster has overwhelmed local authorities and emergency services. Reports from the ground indicate that Moroccan troops and emergency responders are encountering significant challenges in reaching the most affected areas within the Atlas Mountains region. Blocked roads, obstructed by fallen boulders, have hindered access to these remote locations. This logistical hurdle further compounds the difficulties in conducting search and rescue operations.

In the wake of the earthquake, residents of Marrakesh have reported ongoing aftershocks, contributing to the sense of insecurity and fear among the affected population. These aftershocks not only exacerbate structural damage but also heighten the emotional distress of the survivors.

The earthquake’s impact extends beyond the immediate loss of life and property damage. According to the World Health Organization, more than 300,000 people in the ancient city of Marrakesh and its outskirts have been affected by this disaster. The number of casualties is expected to rise as rescue and relief efforts continue.

The Moroccan Red Crescent (MRC) has noted the formidable challenges faced by responders on the ground. Accessing remote areas in the rugged terrain of the Atlas Mountains remains a priority. The deployment of heavy machinery to these areas is essential to facilitate search and rescue operations and clear blocked roads. However, this presents yet another logistical hurdle, emphasizing the urgent need for international assistance and support.

As Morocco grapples with the staggering human and infrastructural toll of this earthquake, the nation’s resilience and unity are being put to the test. The global community must rally behind Morocco, providing both financial and logistical aid to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by this tragic event. The road to recovery will be long and arduous, but with concerted efforts and solidarity, there is hope for healing and rebuilding the shattered communities of central Morocco.
