Autumn is quickly growing to be one of the top seasons for luxury travel as the rich and affluent travelers go farther and beyond the more traditional summer vacation patterns. New data disclosed by Virtuoso at its 38th annual Virtuoso Travel Week in Las Vegas, shows travelers choosing later departures, longer stays and higher end travel experiences. The wish to travel to a destination to experience it in more comfort and with less of a crowd is fast growing travel concern.

This shift is apparent in Europe as September and the autumn months in general gain more travel traction over the typical travel peak in August. Virtuoso reported that bookings for fall 2026 have increased 59 percent while sales increased by 69 percent. Sales for September have increased by 77 percent and bookings, and sales for November have both more than increased by 70 percent. These numbers strongly show that autumn is no longer a shoulder season and will become a very much valued part of the luxury travel market.

European Destinations Benefit From The Fall Travel Shift

Europe provides some of the clearest evidence of changing luxury travel behaviour. Year-to-date sales at Virtuoso’s preferred European hotels were up 39 per cent through June, while September booking volumes have moved substantially closer to August levels than in previous years. Virtuoso’s pacing data indicates that September could potentially outperform August in sales this year.

The attraction is not simply lower prices. European autumn bookings increased 49 per cent even as rates rose by more than seven per cent, resulting in a 64 per cent increase in sales. This indicates that affluent travellers are increasingly purchasing the experience associated with the season rather than choosing autumn primarily for savings.

The French Riviera recorded a particularly sharp increase in rates, while Puglia and the Greek Isles also experienced substantial price growth. The trend demonstrates that desirable European destinations are retaining pricing power even as travellers move towards traditionally quieter months.

Longer Itineraries Are Reshaping Luxury Holidays

Luxury travellers are also changing how they structure their journeys. Virtuoso describes the growth of multi-city itineraries as “city-maxxing”, with travellers combining several destinations into longer holidays rather than concentrating their entire trip around one location.

France and Italy form the most popular combination, followed by France and the United Kingdom and then Italy and Switzerland. Italy features in two out of every five multi-city routings, with Florence, Rome and Venice serving as important components of longer European journeys.

The trend also reflects the growing importance of private villas, branded residences and second homes as bases for extended travel. Rather than simply increasing the number of destinations visited, affluent travellers are placing greater value on flexibility, privacy and the ability to experience several locations within one carefully designed itinerary.

Luxury Spending Is Moving Further Upmarket

The strength of the luxury market is also visible in hotel and cruise spending. Virtuoso’s network is on course for almost 21 per cent year-on-year sales growth. Hotels lead growth among partner categories at 25 per cent, followed by cruise at 22 per cent. Properties charging at least $1,500 per night have recorded a 37 per cent increase in bookings, more than twice the growth rate of lower-priced accommodation.

Future planning is similarly strong. Global leisure sales for travel booked one and two years ahead are up 50 per cent. Higher-value bookings are also expanding, with transactions worth at least $50,000 and cruise bookings at that level both showing significant growth.

This points towards a luxury market in which travellers are not necessarily reducing expenditure to accommodate seasonal changes. Instead, they are reallocating spending towards longer stays, premium accommodation, private experiences and more personalised journeys.

Wellness Becomes A Core Reason To Travel

Wellness has developed beyond a hotel amenity into a central component of luxury itineraries. Virtuoso reports that wellness-focused hotels are recording 28 per cent booking growth, 44 per cent sales growth and a 23 per cent increase in average daily rates.

Longevity tourism is emerging as one of the strongest developments within the segment, combining medical diagnostics and health-focused programmes with luxury hospitality. The report identifies travellers seeking measurable performance improvements, restorative escapes and deeper personal meaning as distinct wellness audiences.

For destinations, this creates opportunities to develop autumn travel around nature, recovery, mindfulness and longer stays rather than relying exclusively on conventional sightseeing.

Human Expertise Gains Importance In The AI Era

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly common among travel professionals, but Virtuoso’s findings also highlight its limitations. Seventy-four per cent of Virtuoso advisers use AI in their businesses, while 70 per cent of preferred partners have adopted the technology. Yet advisers report that AI-generated travel recommendations can become repetitive because they often draw from similar information sources.

This has strengthened the value of human travel expertise. Three in four Virtuoso clients identify accommodation and destination knowledge as a key benefit of working with an adviser, while three in five value the ability to receive experiences tailored specifically to them. Seventy-nine per cent of luxury travellers are also open to using an adviser for future journeys.

The findings suggest that luxury travellers increasingly want distinctive experiences rather than standardised itineraries. Privacy, personalisation and access to less crowded destinations are becoming central components of premium travel planning.

Family Holidays And Cruising Remain Strong

Virtuoso’s July survey of almost 800 advisers worldwide shows that demand is broadening across several travel categories. Multigenerational and family travel was cited by 69 per cent of advisers as an area where clients are requesting more trips. Premium and luxury ocean cruising followed at 63 per cent, while celebration travel reached 60 per cent.

The data also reveals generational differences. Baby boomers are particularly influential in ocean and river cruise demand, while millennials show stronger interest in beach escapes and emerging luxury products and experiences.

The broader booking pattern is equally significant. Sixty per cent of clients are prioritising bucket-list journeys, 42 per cent are booking further ahead to secure preferred options and 30 per cent are taking fewer but longer, higher-quality holidays.

What The Trend Means For Luxury Destinations

The surge in travel during the fall creates opportunities for destinations to move beyond traditional peak season demand. Hotels and tourism organizations can provide the comfort of fall weather, privacy, wellness, and cultural immersion and depth to travelers.

The data shows that the luxury travel market is placing less importance on choosing a destination. The contemporary luxury traveler is concerned with the timing, pace, how the journey is personally relevant to them; they are highly concerned with the quality of the journey. Therefore, the growing interest in travel during the fall reflects a more significant change in the way premium travel is designed and enjoyed.
