According to government spokesperson Kharom Polpornklang, a significant operation by the Employment Department resulted in the apprehension of 721 foreigners engaged in occupations traditionally reserved for Thai nationals.

This action comes in the wake of local complaints, particularly from tourism-centric regions. The crackdown targeted street vendors, hairdressers, drivers, and masseurs, among others, reflecting a concerted effort to address employment law violations across the country.

During the first half of fiscal year 2024, spanning from October 1 to March 18, the department conducted inspections across 25,628 businesses, resulting in legal proceedings against 820 businesses for illegally employing foreigners.

Additionally, of the 306,577 foreigners inspected, 1,689 faced legal actions; 721 of these were specifically charged for occupying roles designated for Thais, with the remainder accused of various other infractions.

The operation revealed a significant number of foreigners working illegally in prime locations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai. Myanmar nationals constituted the majority of those apprehended, followed by individuals from Cambodia, Laos, India, Vietnam, China, and twelve other countries.

This move by the government to enforce employment laws aims to protect local jobs and maintain order in the job market, especially in areas heavily reliant on tourism. Such actions not only safeguard employment opportunities for Thai citizens but also aim to ensure the integrity and sustainability of the tourism industry by addressing local concerns and maintaining a balanced employment ecosystem.
