It has been noted globally that Croatian employment trends are experiencing an upswing, a phenomenon common during this period annually as the demand for seasonal workers in tourism, catering, and hospitality surges. However, it has been observed that there’s a 5% decline in job advertisements compared to the same period the previous year.

As reported by Poslovni Dnevnik/Jadranka Dozan, driven by the customary seasonal job dynamics, the count of insured individuals registered with the Croatian Pension Insurance Institute saw a modest rise of nearly 12,000 last month. This growth, with almost half attributed to the tourism and hospitality sector which saw an increase of approximately 5,600 employees, has resulted in over 103,000 people now being employed in these industries.

Significant sectoral contributions to Croatian employment also came from the trade and construction sectors, where the count of insured individuals saw a rise of about 1,200 from the previous month, reaching over 145,000 in construction and 247,700 in trade.

Despite these increases, certain sectors like education and a group encompassing professional, scientific, and technical activities experienced a reduction of over 550 employees in March. The processing industry, despite being the largest labor pool with over 250,000 individuals, also witnessed a slight decrease in employment numbers.

By the end of the first quarter, employment figures reached over 1.66 million individuals across various sectors, marking an increase of almost 17,000 employees since the end of the previous year, with construction, tourism, and hospitality sectors leading the annual growth.

Concurrently, the online job advertising market is showing signs of a slowdown in labor demand. According to the latest Online Vacancy Index (OVI) figures, published monthly by the Zagreb Institute of Economics in collaboration with MojPosao/MyJob portal, there’s been a notable decrease in labor demand in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, averaging more than a 5% drop—the most significant decline in three years.

Notably, the demand for certain occupations such as salespeople, waiters, and drivers decreased, with a significant fall in ads for teachers, programmers, IT specialists, and mechanics contributing to the decline in the OVI index.

Moreover, the current job market is showing a higher demand for medium-skilled workers, exceeding 65%, while the demand for lower-skilled and highly educated workers has decreased to below 14% and 20%, respectively. The data also highlights a significant reduction in fixed-term contract job ads, especially pronounced in central Croatia and the northern Adriatic region, indicating a shift in the types of contracts offered and regional demand for labor.
