Aeroflot, a Russian airline, will shortly resume direct flights from Moscow to Cuba. Aeroflot Airlines’ general director, Sergei Vladimirovich Alexandrovsky, announced direct flights between Moscow and the Cuban vacation destination of Varadero, for which plane tickets would go on sale in the coming days.

The declaration came as the governments of Cuba and Russia agreed to increase tourism growth during a bilateral summit in Havana, where leaders from both nations signed cooperation agreements.

The signing took place as part of the 20th Session of their Intergovernmental Commission for economic-commercial and scientific-technical collaboration.

The meeting was presided over by Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero and Russian Government Vice-President Dmitri N. Chernyshenko, who briefed participants on Cuba’s opportunities as a tourist destination—a sun-and-beach destination with patrimonial, cultural, and natural values.

Chernyshenko stated that efforts must be focused on increasing the number of Russian tourists visiting Cuba to 500,000 each year.

He also stated that the industry requires hotel rebuilding and maintenance, infrastructure modernization, and hotel specialist training.

Cuba and Russia also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Cuban Tourism Ministry and the Russian Economic Development Ministry, as well as additional training and travel agreements.
