In 2021, the EU witnessed a projected total of 28.1 million bed places obtainable across 597 000 tourist establishments. Italy and France comprised somewhat over one third of the total vacant capacity, with 5.1 million bed places each. After these Member States came Spain with 3.8 million bed places, signifying 13% of the total and Germany with 3.5 million or 12%.
When compared to 2020, the year of the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, the number of bed places and the number of establishments continued to be steady. Nevertheless, compared to 2019, the number of bed places in 2021 was still -2% or 28.8 million and the number of establishments was even lesser, which is -3% or total of 617 953 establishments.
This evidence is as per data available on tourist accommodation published by Eurostat. Data for 2021 signify that three-quarters or 75% of the 591 million nights spent by tourists from abroad in EU tourist lodging were occupied by tourists visiting from other EU Member States, while 16% were spent by tourists visiting from other European countries. Of them, almost half were residents from the UK.
