Devonshire Greens Hotel, a 4-star hotel at Pallivasal in Munnar, Kerala has made a major contribution to sustainable and responsible tourism by erecting a 15-ft high beautifully lit-up Christmas tree made using over 4000 discarded plastic bottles picked up from the tourist hotspots around the hotel itself.

This attempt by the Devonshire staff has received applause from all corners including Responsible Tourism Mission Kerala which considers this as an indication of a positive reception of their programmes and initiatives to weed out the menace of plastic waste from key destinations.

Ajin Aliyas, head of sales & marketing of the hotel, who led the team from the front said, “We have been receiving positive comments from everywhere including the social media, the local panchayat, and the local people.”

He added, “We got inspiration from the ideas and programmes of the Responsible Tourism Mission to make destinations plastic free. The success of the programme in Kumarakom made us think of something different.”

Set atop a mountain cliff in the midst of lush green tea plantations and waterfalls, Devonshire has many attractions frequented by tourists. These include Attukad waterfalls, Devikulam, Mattupetty among others. Over a period of two months, the Devonshire team in batches collected over 8000 discarded plastic bottles from these places, segregated, cleaned and decorated them to put together a Christmas tree with the message of sustainable environment.
