DHL Express, the leading global provider of international express services, and Japan Airlines (JAL) have entered into a long-term agreement to utilize JAL’s Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft (*1). This collaboration aims to establish a sustainable network to meet the increasing customer demand in the expanding international express and e-commerce shipping market in East Asia.

In collaboration with DHL, JAL plans to implement a new business model within its network, connecting Japan, Seoul, Shanghai, and Taipei, as announced on December 1, 2023. The objective is to offer businesses and consumers a reliable and sustainable air cargo network for international trade and purchases.

In response to the significant growth in cross-border express shipments, DHL has bolstered its infrastructure network, including the recent expansion of its Central Asia Hub, the largest hub facility in the Asia Pacific region. Leveraging the routes introduced by JAL after February 19, 2024, DHL aims to further enhance its intra-East Asia network.

Yuichiro Kito, Executive Officer of Cargo & Mail at Japan Airlines Co., Ltd, expressed, “We see this agreement as a reinforcement of the longstanding partnership between JAL and DHL. Operating our own freighters for the first time in 13 years, we intend to address societal challenges and position it as a catalyst for our company’s significant business growth, aligning with the evolving needs of our customers.”

Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan, commented, “This new agreement with JAL marks a crucial milestone for DHL as we continue to strengthen our air network connecting Japan and East Asia. By ensuring the stability of our air network, we can offer a more adaptable and secure response to the growth in shipments and changing demand, particularly on the vital China-Japan route.”

JAL remains committed to addressing societal issues through ongoing maintenance and development of logistics infrastructure, aiming to create new value through logistics.
