Issued by the Shandong Office of the Hong Kong Business Daily, this announcement highlights Liaocheng City’s commitment to preserving and enhancing the rich heritage of Chinese culture through the organization of the “Liaocheng Folk Culture Festival” over the Spring Festival period. This initiative is designed to deepen the understanding of traditional festival significances, fostering an environment filled with joy, luck, warmth, and harmony.

The festival is scheduled in three phases: from February 11th to 18th (the 2nd to 9th day of the first lunar month), from February 23rd to 25th (the 14th to 16th day of the first lunar month), and on March 11th (the 2nd day of the second lunar month). Daily activities, running from 10:00 to 12:00 in the morning, 14:00 to 16:00 in the afternoon, and 18:00 to 19:00 in the evening, will feature a range of cultural performances. These include traditional folk music and dances, dragon and lion dances, Yangko and Gaoqiao performances, along with showcases of gongs, drums, land boats, Chinese opera, sports, and acrobatics at the Fourth Street within the scenic area of Liaocheng’s Ancient Water City.

In conjunction, Liaocheng City is introducing a series of initiatives like the “Intangible Cultural Heritage Happy Shopping with Discounts” for exhibition and sales, a themed exhibition on the “24 Solar Terms”, the “Yellow River Grand Fair” at Fuya Square, the 2024 New Year City Wall Lantern Festival, and a themed street lantern exhibition titled “Hua Deng Chu Shang”.

These events aim to celebrate the cultural legacy of the Yellow River and the Grand Canal during the Spring Festival, encouraging public engagement and appreciation for the vibrant customs of intangible cultural heritage. The goal is to seamlessly blend these traditions with contemporary living, breathing new life into age-old customs with a modern twist.

Liaocheng, often referred to as the “Venice of Northern China,” is a city where the grandeur of the Yellow River and the Grand Canal converge. It boasts significant historical allure and is recognized as a unique travel destination, home to the world’s seventh-largest Ferris wheel, the renowned Guangyue Tower among China’s top ten architectural marvels, and Dongchang Lake, the largest in Northern China.
