The Department of Transportation (DOT) in the U.S. has declared a $140 million civil fine against Southwest Airlines for several breaches of consumer security regulations throughout and after the functioning fiascos that annulled 16,900 flights and marooned more than two million passengers in the course of last year’s Christmas break and into the New Year. This fine is 30 times greater than any earlier DOT fine for consumer safety breaches. The bulk of the fine will go to recompensing future Southwest commuters impacted by invalidations or noteworthy deferrals triggered by the airline.

The fine is over and above the more than $600 million in repayments and recompenses that DOT already confirmed Southwest passengers who confronted travel disturbances in the course of the functioning collapse.

In September last year, as per the advice of Secretary Buttigieg, Southwest Airlines made important alterations to its customer service strategy that permitted passengers to compensations for expenditures like meals, hotels and ground transport if a flight is considerably hindered or annulled because of an airline problem.

On account of DOT’s activities, Southwest was lawfully needed to abide by those obligations all through the 2022 holiday travel collapse.

Altogether, Southwest will pay more than $750 million for the holiday breakdown, with the bulk going to commuters for repayments, compensations, quick rewards or future reimbursement because of DOT’s actions.
