Drusillas Zoo in Alfriston has announced its most significant investment to date, a custom-designed residence for its colobus monkeys, aimed at offering them a habitat that closely mimics their natural environment. Initiated in September 2023, the construction of this spacious new abode replaces the former wallaby and agouti enclosures.

The zoo elaborated that this new habitat for the arboreal black and white colobus monkeys would include tailor-made “enrichment equipment” and climbing branches tailored to their needs. Features of the new home include a heated tree to provide warmth during the colder seasons and a waterfall for playful and bathing purposes.

A portion of the habitat will consist of “hand-carved rockwork,” equipped with various levels for climbing and resting. Moreover, the monkeys will enjoy jungle-style themed huts that mirror those found in Africa, promoting the concept of eco-tourism within the zoo’s domain.

A spokesperson from Drusillas highlighted the meticulous research and consideration that went into designing the colobus monkeys’ new home. The aim was to prioritize animal welfare best practices while creating an environment that offers a broad range of activities and closely resembles their natural habitat.

Drusillas aspires not only to enhance the living conditions of the colobus monkeys but also to support conservation efforts through fundraising and raising awareness about the vital role of wildlife charities. The zoo is keen on providing its keepers with opportunities to witness the conservation efforts of Colobus Conservation in Kenya firsthand.

This emphasis on eco-tourism stems from Drusillas’ partnership with the Colobus Conservation charity, which organizes eco-tours in the Diani region to aid the Angolan Colobus monkeys. The charity has been recognized for its commendable work over the past 25 years, focusing on the conservation, preservation, and protection of the Colobus monkeys and their coastal forest habitats.

In line with its commitment to the monkeys and conservation efforts, Drusillas is investing £500,000 in constructing this innovative habitat, featuring a heated tree among its many amenities designed for the wellbeing of its resident monkeys.
