The Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) has recognized 70 hotels with the prestigious ‘Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp’ for their exemplary commitment to sustainability. This accolade is part of a pioneering initiative that acknowledges hotels excelling in DET’s 19 ‘Sustainability Requirements’. Dubai, setting a precedent as the first city in the region to integrate sustainability criteria into its hotel classification system, advances its ambition to emerge as a premier sustainable destination with the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp (DST) initiative.

Initiated alongside the UAE Year of Sustainability and coinciding with Dubai’s role as the host city for the COP28 at Expo City Dubai, this initiative encourages hotels to fulfill their sustainability ambitions by adhering to DET’s stringent Sustainability Requirements. These guidelines encompass a wide range of practices, including sustainable management, energy, water, and food management plans, education for guests, employee training, the establishment of sustainability committees within hotels, and Corporate Social Responsibility efforts aimed at benefiting local communities.

An award ceremony was held at Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, attended by distinguished hospitality leaders and DET’s senior management, celebrated the certification of these hotels. His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, and Mr. Yousuf Lootah, Head of DET Environmental Sustainability & Social Responsibility Committee, presented the awards.

The DST Stamp serves as a testament to the dedication of these 70 hotels to embracing sustainable practices, aligning with the expectations of both travel industry partners and a growing demographic of eco-conscious travelers.

Hotels were evaluated through a rigorous three-tiered system—gold, silver, and bronze—based on their compliance levels. The evaluation process was meticulously overseen by a committee comprising senior industry experts like Ms. Sameera al Rais and representatives from various governmental and environmental bodies to ensure integrity and strict adherence to the criteria, reflecting global best practices.

This initiative propels the tourism sector’s stride towards supporting the UAE’s NetZero 2050 strategy and resonates with the objectives of the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33. It underscores Dubai’s endeavor to rank among the top three global cities for business and leisure and as the prime city for living, visiting, and working.
