Easter weekend proves good for South African tourism business

This year’s Easter weekend was important for the South African tourism business. There was a 27% upsurge in turnover and a 15% upsurge in transaction sizes year-on-year on its commercialfacilities platform.


According to FNB, this specifies a robustrecovery in domestic tourism movement, cashing in on the impetus gained last yearas aresult of the COVID-19 pandemic’s negative fiscaleffect.


FNB Merchant Services CEO, ThokozaniDlamini, said that local call for travel with regard to the Easter weekend increased non-stop, with accommodation accounting for 229% of tourism expenditure within their base, followed by airlines, car hires and travel agents at 82%, 19%, and 58%, correspondingly, with the generalinput to tourism businessgrowing compared to the similar period in 2022.


The airline businesssupposedlywitnessedover 100% surge in growth from 2021 to 2022.


Dlaminisaid thatsince the Easter Weekend is led by domestic tourism, it is not awonder that room and housing, which mostly feature overnight along with few day stays, did well.


Dlaminiadded that with many consumers continuing to steer through the roughfinancialsituation, they would probablygo for more affordableretreat experiences.


Another noteworthylandmark was a 507% surge in usage of busesduring the Easter weekend, which Dlaminisaid that is worthy news for the long-distance bus business, which is still recuperating from the starkmonetaryeffects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
