Breathing pace into his tourism vision for Akwa Ibom state, Governor Umo Eno has given major projects the go-ahead and building is already underway on an international hotel, a large convention centre, and The ARISE Shopping City in Uyo.

Eno seeks to increase the state’s economic diversity and decrease reliance on oil by investing in tourism and hospitality as well as aviation and investments.

According to the state Government, work is ongoing at the Ibom International Hotel, the International Convention Centre, and ARISE Shopping City.

Together with some other ongoing projects, these will develop an integrated tourism sector to draw conferences, business travel, leisure travel, and investors.

Akwa Ibom’s plan is significant to the entire country’s tourism plans. If the state is successful in adding infrastructure to support a visiting economy, then the state will be able to provide year-round opportunities for tourists and travelers.

Akwa Ibom Makes Tourism Part of Its Beyond-Oil Strategy

The state government has made its economic objective clear.

Governor Eno has repeatedly identified tourism as an important part of Akwa Ibom’s plan for economic diversification.

In his 2026 Easter broadcast, the governor said the state was investing in tourism and its wider ecosystem as a strategic way to diversify the economy beyond oil.

The government confirmed that work was ongoing at the Ibom International Hotel, ARISE City Shopping Centre and Ibom International Convention Centre.

Other projects form part of the same strategy.

These include the ARISE Palm Resort, the Ibom International Hospital and renovation of the Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort.

The goal is to create several connected reasons for people to visit Akwa Ibom rather than relying on a single attraction.

Uyo Targets the Business Events Market

The International Convention Centre is particularly important to the state’s strategy.

Official government information describes it as a 5,000-capacity facility.

A convention centre of this size could give Uyo additional capacity to compete for conferences, exhibitions, corporate meetings, government events and other large gatherings.

Business events can provide important economic benefits because delegates spend money beyond the venue itself.

Hotels gain guests. Restaurants receive customers. Airlines carry additional passengers. Transport companies move delegates, while event organisers, caterers and other local suppliers gain business.

Governor Eno has described Uyo as an increasingly popular location for seminars, retreats, conventions and other events.

The new convention centre is intended to strengthen that position.

New 200-Room Hotel Supports Convention Ambition

Large conferences also require accommodation.

This explains the strategic importance of the 200-room Ibom International Hotel being developed as part of the tourism cluster.

The government wants visitors to be able to attend conferences while having access to suitable accommodation and leisure services nearby.

This type of integrated development is common in major convention destinations.

Delegates generally prefer shorter transfers between airports, hotels and event venues. Event organisers also benefit when large numbers of participants can stay close to a conference centre.

Akwa Ibom is attempting to build this convenience into the Uyo tourism ecosystem.

The state government confirmed again in April 2026 that construction was continuing at the hotel. It has also included the property among state-owned hospitality facilities covered by a management agreement with Aleph Technical and Advisory Services.

ARISE Shopping City Adds Retail and Leisure

The ARISE Shopping City provides another component.

Governor Eno has described the project as part of the overall tourism design surrounding the Uyo development.

The idea is to allow visitors attending conferences or staying in nearby accommodation to access shopping and recreation without travelling far across the city.

The state government’s official description places the Shopping City alongside the convention centre, hotel and amusement facilities.

That combination could make the wider development more than a collection of separate buildings.

Instead, Akwa Ibom wants to create an area where accommodation, events, retail and leisure operate together.

This could help encourage visitors to stay longer and spend more money within the local economy.

Government Wants International Standards

Quality will be crucial if the strategy is to work.

Governor Eno has repeatedly inspected tourism construction sites and emphasised the importance of completing projects to international standards.

This matters because building a hotel or convention centre does not automatically create a successful tourism destination.

Facilities must be professionally managed.

Service quality must remain consistent. Maintenance needs to continue after construction finishes. Marketing must attract customers, while pricing has to remain competitive.

Akwa Ibom has already taken steps towards addressing the management question.

In February 2026, the state government signed a memorandum of understanding with Aleph Technical and Advisory Services covering the management of four government-owned hospitality assets.

Those facilities include the Ibom International Hotel, Ibom Icon and Golf Resort, Four Points by Sheraton and ARISE Palm Resort.

Aviation Could Give Akwa Ibom an Important Advantage

Akwa Ibom’s tourism plans are also closely connected with aviation.

The state owns Ibom Air and has continued investing in aviation infrastructure.

Governor Eno said in his May 2026 anniversary address that the state had recently completed a maiden international flight from its new terminal to Accra, Ghana.

The government is working towards expanding international operations through Victor Attah International Airport.

That connectivity could become one of Akwa Ibom’s strongest tourism advantages.

A convention centre can attract major events only when delegates can reach the destination conveniently.

International and domestic air links therefore strengthen the commercial case for the hotel, convention centre, shopping facilities and resorts being developed across the state.

Tourism Investment Could Support Wider Economic Growth

Akwa Ibom’s strategy is ultimately about more than attracting holidaymakers.

Tourism creates demand across multiple sectors.

Hotels need workers. Conferences require caterers and event specialists. Shopping centres need retailers. Airlines create aviation jobs. Visitors use taxis, restaurants and entertainment facilities.

This multiplier effect explains why governments increasingly view tourism infrastructure as an economic development tool.

Akwa Ibom’s 2026 Business Enabling Reform Action Plan also places sustainable large-scale investment within the state’s wider development strategy.

The plan targets increased private investment and stronger investment promotion under the ARISE Agenda.

If tourism projects can attract private operators and generate sustainable commercial activity, they could support this broader objective.

Sustainability Will Determine Long-Term Success

Construction is only the beginning.

The long-term test will be whether Akwa Ibom can operate these facilities sustainably.

Large tourism assets require continuous maintenance and professional management. Hotels need sufficient occupancy. Convention centres require a steady calendar of events. Shopping facilities depend on tenants and customers.

Government investment can build the infrastructure, but demand must ultimately support it.

Environmental sustainability will also become increasingly important.

Modern travellers and international event organisers are paying greater attention to energy use, waste management, local sourcing and the environmental footprint of destinations.

Embedding these principles into Akwa Ibom’s tourism development could strengthen its international competitiveness.

Akwa Ibom Tries to Turn Uyo Into a Tourism Hub

Governor Eno has expressed an obvious goal to make Akwa Ibom a premier tourist destination among the Nigerian states.

This goal has taken shape.

The construction of a 5,000 seat International Convention Centre, the addition of 200 hotel rooms, the creation of an ARISE Shopping City, and the development of resorts and other hospitality ventures will strengthen the tourism business.

Ibom Air and Victor Attah International Airport help to fulfill the necessary transportation elements.

Now it is time for Governor Eno to fulfill the elements he envisioned to make this goal a reality.

Akwa Ibom must complete all visionary projects, bring in professional staff to manage them, entice additional private funding, and develop sufficient tourism so that all of the work is not for naught.

Akwa Ibom has the potential for first of its kind tourism initiatives for Nigeria.

It is important to note that Akwa Ibom is a place to watch for the growth of tourism in Nigeria for the next few years. Governor Eno’s tourism vision will be overwhelmingly successful based on the growth of jobs, sustainable tourism funding, third party investment in tourism ventures, and the increase in domestic and international travel to the region.
