For the position of director general of UNESCO, Egypt has selected its erstwhile tourism and antiquities minister, Khaled El Enany. Mr El Enany’s selection to the UN cultural organization was declared by Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister of Egypt, on Wednesday at a press conference organized at the Cabinet building in the New Administrative Capital.

He was recognized for maintaining the tourism industry of Egypt through the adverse effects of the pandemic. Mr. El Enany was the first minister to receive the responsibility of handling tourism and antiquities sectors of the country together.

In 1966, the tourism and antiquities sectors were split into two ministries.

He opened many new museums during his tenure, and introduced dozens of reinstatement and improvement related projects at various archaeological sites.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, while delivering a speech, Mr El Enany, said that the goal of UNESCO is to preserve cultural heritage in line with the objective of Egypt for its several heritage sites.

For the new Unesco director general, an election will be arranged at the end of 2025.

Mr. El Enany also explained that he understands the significance of this selection, mainly taking into consideration the responsibility that is on the shoulders of the Unesco at this critical moment in human history.

Still, there are millions of children worldwide who do not get the right education, and material. Also, immaterial cultural heritage is facing major challenges, like climate change.
