Chinese New Year

This year, the Chinese New Year, occurring on February 10th, stands as a major global tourism event. The festivities prompt millions of people nationwide to embark on journeys, visiting family, indulging in cultural festivities, and partaking in the holiday spirit. This surge in travel is a boon for the industry, generating significant revenue for those involved in the travel sector.

For this iteration of the Chinese New Year, which spans from February 9th to 17th and ushers in the Year of the Dragon, data from HBX Group identifies Harbin, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou as key destinations. Notably, Beijing and Shanghai, both pivotal in politics and commerce, rank within the top five choices for travelers during this period.

The data also indicates a preference among travelers, both domestic and international, to book stays ranging from 2 to 6 nights, aiming to maximize their holiday experience.

Pippa Williamson, VP Commercial APAC at HBX Group, commented on the occasion: “The celebration of Chinese New Year is deeply ingrained in tradition and plays a vital role in stimulating the travel industry’s economy. Our recent findings demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of both destinations and travelers alike. We are committed to equipping our partners with valuable insights and innovative strategies to cater to the dynamic preferences of travelers in the APAC region.”

The sector is witnessing a significant uptick in arrivals, propelled by recent changes in travel regulations. The lifting of the last Covid-19 travel restrictions in August marks this year’s celebration as the first unrestricted New Year event in the new decade. Additionally, visa regulations have been relaxed, including visa-free entry for citizens of five European countries and resumption of visa-free access for Singaporean citizens, catalyzing a significant increase in inbound travel for the 2024 Chinese New Year.

According to HBX Group, prominent outbound markets include Thailand, Japan, the USA, Spain, and the UK, with Shanghai, Guangzhou, Taipei, Macau, and Hong Kong leading the inbound preferences.

Looking at international travel trends from China, there’s a rising demand for destinations such as Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Singapore, Bali, and London, highlighting a diverse range of preferences among Chinese travelers for this year’s festivities.
