Emirates, the largest international airline globally, commemorates two decades of service in Ghana. Since its inaugural flight in January 2004 at Kotoka International Airport utilizing an A330-200 aircraft, Emirates has evolved into a reliable transportation ally, linking Ghana to the global stage and making substantial contributions to its thriving economy and community.

Commencing with three weekly flights in 2004, Emirates presently operates a daily non-stop service connecting Accra and Dubai. Over the last 20 years, the airline has facilitated the travel of more than 2 million passengers between Accra and Dubai, fostering tourism and business activities with close to 13,000 roundtrip flights covering a distance of 80.71 million kilometers during the same period. In 2018, Emirates underscored its commitment by organizing a special A380 flight to mark the inauguration of Ghana’s Terminal 3.

Through its Dubai hub, Emirates offers seamless connections to over 140 passenger and cargo destinations spanning six continents. The airline’s efficient fleet of 249 passenger aircraft guarantees award-winning comfort and service, including a three-class layout on the Boeing 777-300ER from Accra.

Popular outbound destinations from Accra include key points in London and China, along with cities such as Canada, Delhi, Sydney, Singapore, and Istanbul. Notable feeder markets for Accra encompass travelers from similar points, in addition to Melbourne, Perth, and South Korea.

Emirates prioritizes customer experience excellence, providing passengers with a superior in-flight experience, featuring Ghanaian-inspired meals and a vast entertainment selection through its ice system, offering more than 6,500 channels of carefully curated global entertainment content, including movies, TV shows, music, podcasts, games, and audiobooks.

Premium class passengers and select Skywards members can avail themselves of lounge and chauffeur drive services before their flights in Ghana. In Dubai, premium class customers can benefit from complimentary Chauffeur Drive services to and from the airport, along with the option to relax or work in one of its lounge facilities at Dubai International Airport.

As a facilitator of trade, Emirates has played a pivotal role in connecting Ghana to the global market, supporting local industries and businesses. Emirates SkyCargo, with its extensive cargo network and state-of-the-art facilities, has been instrumental in promoting global trade, ensuring the seamless transportation of goods and fostering economic development in the countries it serves.

Emirates’ flights have transported over 51,000 tonnes of cargo from Ghana, encompassing commodities such as fresh fruits, vegetables, perishables, and precious metals. Notable imports into Ghana include apparels, household goods, auto spares, and vaccines, totaling over 41,000 tonnes.

Beyond economic contributions, Emirates has actively supported the community, earning recognition for its efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic with the Presidential Honour for Distinguished Service in 2023. Emirates SkyCargo played a crucial role in airlifting and distributing 62 tonnes of Covid-19 vaccine doses to Ghana during the pandemic. Additionally, Emirates supported the transportation of equipment donated by China’s Jack Ma Foundation to the Government of Ghana and operated 12 repatriation flights from Dubai to Accra, bringing back over 3,000 Ghanaian citizens, residents, and others from more than 31 cities seeking to return to the country.

Ghana holds a significant place in Emirates’ African narrative, and the airline takes immense pride in the shared journey of the past two decades. Whether facilitating trade, connecting families, showcasing Ghanaian cuisine, or empowering local businesses, Emirates remains a steadfast supporter and partner in Ghana’s success.
