Emirates has initiated the implementation of its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) agreement with Neste at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport starting this month. Throughout 2024, more than 2 million gallons of SAF blend will be integrated into Schiphol Airport’s fueling infrastructure.

The airline is committed to monitoring the integration of SAF into the fueling systems and assessing its environmental impact using established industry practices. This collaboration with Neste, revealed towards the end of last year, marks a significant milestone for Emirates in terms of SAF procurement volumes.

The incorporation of SAF into Amsterdam Schiphol’s fueling system will ultimately include over 700,000 gallons of pure SAF. Moreover, Emirates is collaborating with Neste to introduce SAF at Singapore Changi Airport in the upcoming months.

Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, Emirates said: “Collaborating with committed partners like Neste is one of the practical steps we are taking to reduce our emissions, and it’s an all-important milestone in our own sustainability journey as an airline. Strong partnerships like this, especially at major air transport hubs such as Amsterdam, lay the foundation for how we can work with partners and airports to increase access to and availability of SAF across our network.”

Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation, Neste said: “We are proud to support Emirates in their sustainability journey. SAF is an available solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from air travel and it is exciting that Emirates have started using our Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. It is also a great example of how we are working together with partners to accelerate SAF usage and are looking forward to the next steps of our cooperation.”

The SAF used under this agreement is compatible with current aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure, offering up to an 80% reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional jet fuel when used in its neat form.

Since its first SAF-blended flight in 2017 from Chicago, Emirates has expanded its SAF operations to include flights from Paris, Lyon, and Oslo. The airline has also successfully integrated SAF into Dubai Airport’s fueling system, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability initiatives.

Furthermore, Emirates became the inaugural international airline to join the UK’s Solent Cluster, aiming to establish a SAF production facility capable of generating up to 200,000 tonnes annually by 2032. The airline actively participates in various industry and governmental forums to promote SAF production and supply scale-up. In collaboration with the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority, Emirates has contributed to the development of the UAE’s power-to-liquid fuels roadmap and the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap, with goals to position the UAE as a regional leader in alternative aviation fuels, targeting 700 million litres of SAF production by 2030.

As a pioneer in the Air-CRAFT UAE research consortium, Emirates is at the forefront of efforts to develop and scale SAF technologies, underscoring its commitment to a more sustainable aviation industry.
