Meghalaya is gearing up to captivate visitors with its lush strawberry fields during the forthcoming ‘Strawberry Festival’, scheduled from April 5 to April 13, in line with the state’s efforts to enhance agro-tourism.
This festival emerges from a joint initiative involving the tourism, agriculture, and farmers’ welfare departments. The horticulture directorate of the state has led extensive strawberry cultivation efforts under various central and state schemes.
As per an official announcement, the scenic villages of Syntung and Nohron in East Khasi Hills, Umktieh and Sohliya in Ri Bhoi, and Baladinggre, Darechikgre, and Durakantragre in West Garo Hills are designated to host the Strawberry Festival, heralding the beginning of the strawberry harvest season.
Beyond savoring the chance to handpick fresh strawberries at the farms, attendees can engage in wine tasting, participate in jam-making workshops, and partake in lavish camping experiences amidst the strawberry plantations. Moreover, live music performances and cultural displays will add to the festivities. Additionally, strawberry seedlings will be available for purchase.
“The festival aims to invigorate local economies in rural regions while spotlighting the state’s potential for agro-tourism,” stressed the statement, underlining the importance of fostering rural entrepreneurship and leveraging Meghalaya’s agricultural richness to entice tourists.
