In 2026 the province of Lao Cai in Vietnam registered a record 9.8 million visitors during the first 9 months. The increasing popularity of mountain tourism, cultural and adventure tourism attracted visitors from within the country and abroad. Lao Cai province has a number of mountain tourism destinations, cultural, adventure and sports tourism. International tourist arrivals during the first 9 months increased to over 1.36 million and earned the province more than 1.62 billion US dollars from tourism activities. With these results, the province is optimistic that it will achieve its annual target of 1.66 million international tourist arrivals and 3.7 trillion Vietnamese Dong from tourism activities for 2026.

The latest performance represents around 80 per cent of Lao Cai’s full-year tourism revenue target of VND51.1 trillion, highlighting the growing economic importance of tourism across the northern mountainous region. From famous destinations such as Sa Pa and Mu Cang Chai to emerging cultural and nature-based attractions, Lao Cai is strengthening its position as one of Vietnam’s most attractive mountain tourism destinations.

A major increase in visitor numbers was recorded during Vietnam’s National Day holiday in early September. Over the five-day holiday period, Lao Cai welcomed an estimated 450,155 visitors, representing around double the number recorded during the same period in the previous year.

The holiday also generated significant international demand, with approximately 34,068 international visitors travelling to the province. Total tourism revenue during this period reached an estimated VND2.21 trillion.

Accommodation providers benefited from the surge in demand, with average occupancy rates across Lao Cai exceeding 75 per cent. In Sa Pa, one of the province’s most popular mountain destinations, hotels rated three stars and above achieved occupancy levels of around 95 per cent.

The strong holiday performance reflected the continued popularity of northern Vietnam’s mountain destinations, particularly during periods when travellers seek nature, cultural experiences and seasonal attractions.

Lao Cai Moves Closer To Annual Visitor Target

By 2 September 2026, Lao Cai had already welcomed nearly 9.47 million visitors, reaching approximately 83.4 per cent of its annual tourism target. International arrivals had exceeded 1.31 million, demonstrating the increasing role of overseas travellers in the province’s tourism economy.

Visitor momentum continued beyond the holiday season as the arrival of autumn brought one of Lao Cai’s most famous natural spectacles — the golden rice harvest.

The province’s terraced fields, especially across mountainous areas, transformed into a seasonal attraction as visitors arrived to experience the changing landscapes. The combination of scenic beauty and local agricultural traditions has become one of Lao Cai’s strongest tourism assets during the autumn months.

Mu Cang Chai Strengthens Position As A Seasonal Tourism Hub

Among Lao Cai’s destinations, Mu Cang Chai continued to attract strong visitor interest through its iconic terraced rice fields and cultural experiences.

During the first eight months of 2026, Mu Cang Chai welcomed more than 110,425 visitors, including approximately 16,865 international tourists. The destination generated more than VND263 billion in tourism revenue during the period.

The National Day holiday created another significant boost, bringing around 27,000 visitors to Mu Cang Chai and generating an estimated VND48.5 billion in tourism revenue.

The destination’s popularity has been strengthened through seasonal events and cultural programmes designed to showcase local traditions while creating memorable experiences for visitors.

The 2026 Mu Cang Chai Golden Season Festival introduced a wide range of cultural and sporting activities, including traditional costume performances, Hmong khèn dancing, beeswax pattern drawing, banh day making and community-based experiences.
