European Association of Event Centres leads European events in sustainability

For more than a decade, the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) has upheld its commitment to sustainability, proudly maintaining its Green Globe certification and achieving the prestigious PLATINUM status for its outstanding efforts. Initially certified by Green Globe in 2010, the EVVC excelled, meeting 90% of the certification criteria during the independent, on-site verification inspection conducted in October of this year.

In their day-to-day operations, the dedicated EVVC staff actively prioritize the responsible use of office materials and resources. They implement simple yet impactful measures, such as procuring office supplies and consumables made from recycled materials that are further recyclable. Additionally, the team focuses on water and electricity conservation, while adopting practices to reduce printing and copying, ultimately contributing to paper savings.

Notably, the EVVC has strategically positioned its main office in close proximity to Frankfurt’s main station, enhancing accessibility via rail. This foresighted decision has proven successful, with all employees opting for public transport as their means of commuting to work.

The core objective of the EVVC is to support its members in navigating the intricate challenges of operating event venues sustainably. Hannah Janke, EVVC’s Sustainability Officer, emphasizes, “Our smaller member venues, in particular, often lack the capacity to comprehensively address these issues. In response, we lay crucial groundwork, such as facilitating idea exchange within our working groups on topics like climate neutrality or providing the sustainability code ‘fairpflichtet’ for the German event industry.”

In a concerted effort to mitigate the environmental impact of events, the EVVC collaborated with the German Convention Bureau eV (GCB) to develop ‘fairpflichtet’ as a sustainability code applicable to all event industry venues and businesses, irrespective of size. This code empowers event industry providers to transparently document their sustainable initiatives, establishing their credibility as conscientious entrepreneurs. Furthermore, the EVVC and GCB jointly organize the Sustainable Events Conference (SECON) every two years, offering the industry fresh perspectives on sustainable concepts for event management.
