At the 2023 G20 Summit in India, it was revealed that Trieste’s unique geographical and geopolitical strengths, combined with its rich historical backdrop and cultural mosaic, make it the premier gateway from Europe to the Indo-Pacific. This positions the city at the heart of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), fostering an economic link that spans continents. According to Kaush Arha, President of the Free & Open Indo-Pacific Forum, and Paolo Messa, both affiliated with the Atlantic Council, Trieste’s strategic location near key European cities and its access to the industrial zones of northern Italy and beyond earmark it as Europe’s leading junction for Eastern trade.
Trieste’s pivotal role in handling a significant portion of Europe’s imports from Turkey underlines its potential to parallel Rotterdam’s importance to Atlantic trade, suggesting a broad economic impact benefiting the United States, European nations, and the Indo-Pacific region. The revitalization of Trieste, as Arha and Messa note, can be attributed to its recent developments and the leadership of the Port’s president, Zeno D’Agostino.
With Italy at the helm of the G7 this year, there’s a unique opportunity to further elevate the Trieste-Monfalcone area as a crucial hub in Europe’s shift towards the Indo-Pacific. The recommendations include upgrading transportation infrastructure, offering tax incentives and zoning concessions to boost the national shipbuilding sector headquartered in the region, and proposing a Trieste Investment Forum to foster collaboration with global partners.
This reimagining of Trieste’s role not only highlights its economic potential but also serves as a call to global travelers and investors to witness and be part of a historic pivot, underscoring the city’s global significance in shaping future trade pathways.
