Eurowings live tracking of luggage with SITA Bag Journey

Eurowings partners with SITA for a 5-year deal to use Bag Journey, enhancing luggage tracking and improving passenger experiences.

Eurowings has finalized a five-year agreement to implement SITA Bag Journey, a system that offers live tracking of passenger luggage throughout their travel. This initiative aims to enhance the baggage handling experience for world travelers, streamline luggage operations, and diminish the costs associated with mismanaged luggage.

The system offers a comprehensive view of the luggage’s journey, from check-in to collection upon arrival. Utilizing this system, Eurowings’ employees will be able to pinpoint the exact location of each piece of luggage, including its specific location within the airport. In the future, Eurowings plans to share this luggage tracking information with passengers via the SITA Bag Journey API, ensuring passengers remain informed about their luggage’s location and arrival.

Mismanaged luggage represents a significant issue in the aviation sector, costing the aviation industry billions each year. According to SITA’s 2023 Baggage IT Insights, there was a 74.7% increase in the rate of mishandled luggage in 2022, equating to 7.6 mishandled bags per thousand passengers. This increase is largely due to the rise in passenger numbers. As the aviation industry faces ongoing staffing challenges, there’s a growing focus on enhancing efficiency through smart luggage management solutions like SITA Bag Journey.

By adopting SITA’s Bag Journey, Eurowings will align with IATA’s Resolution 753, which mandates tracking bags at four critical points: during check-in, loading, transfers, and upon arrival. SITA will incorporate this technology across most global airports served by Eurowings, and it will be integrated with SITA’s WorldTracer® system for locating mismanaged or delayed luggage. For smaller airports, Eurowings can utilize SITA’s portable bag scanning solution, SITA Bag Journey NetScan.
