Sri Lanka is all set to boost the number of visitors and take it to 5 million a year in an initiation to renew its tourism and perk up its struggling economy, as per the ambassador of the island to Saudi Arabia.

At an event, the ambassador, Pakeer Mohideen Amza was speaking on this. It was organized in Riyadh by the Sri Lankan Embassy on Monday with an intention to encourage tourism to the South Asian country. This country has faced financial crisis and widespread social unrest since 2022.

The embassy is all set to give confidence to the visitors from the Middle East, particularly from Saudi Arabia, to visit the island of Sri Lanka.

The ambassador, in a presentation, shared tourism statistics and emphasized the heritage, history of architecture and natural attractions of the country.

To the country’s economy tourism will contribute in a huge way, which has undergone immense hardships because of the pandemic and invasion of Russia in Ukraine, Amza said.

Azam also added that this year has started in a positive way. He can say that in 2019, they had some challenging times. The year after, was the pandemic year. In 2021, the tourism started crumbling in the island. He added that in 2022, they started bouncing back; however, still, they had a terrible financial condition. So, that damaged their tourism development, he said.

Sri Lanka, however, in January and February of 2023, had over 100,000 visitors. This signaled a powerful tourism market.
