The Gangneung Danoje Festival, an event deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Korea, is set to celebrate its annual festivities from June 6 to 13 this year, coinciding with Dano on June 10. Recognized for its historical significance, the festival, held in Gangneung—a city known for its eastern coastal beauty just two hours from Seoul—commemorates Dano, the “highest day” or “god’s day.”

This occasion is one of Korea’s three most significant traditional holidays, celebrated with fervor alongside Chuseok and Lunar New Year. The people of the Joseon Dynasty era in Gangneung traditionally gathered weeks in advance to honor the hard work of crop planting and to pray to the mountain gods for a prosperous harvest and peace within their community.

Expanding Tourism and Cultural Appreciation

The Danoje Festival, honoured as Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Property and recognized by UNESCO in 2005, is not only a testament to Korea’s rich cultural legacy but also plays a pivotal role in promoting tourism and cultural exchange. Culture Minister Yu In-chon, during his visit to Gangneung, underscored the importance of encouraging citizens to immerse themselves in this cultural festivity, donning traditional Hanbok attire. His visit was part of the ministry’s Local 100 project, aimed at revitalizing local tourism by exposing the hidden gems of the city to a broader audience.

Cultural Immersion and Entrepreneurial Support

The festival initiates with a shamanistic ritual at Chilsadang, a traditional building with historical significance, setting the tone for a series of events that blend cultural heritage with communal participation. This year, the Gangneung Danoje Festival Committee plans to bolster the city’s allure by offering year-round ritual performances and launching pilot programs for tourists at the Ojuk Hanok Village, such as sinju-making and a unique six-course Dano dinner, enhancing the experiential aspect of the festival.

Promoting Gangneung Beyond the Summer

Yu also met with young entrepreneurs in Gangneung, emphasizing the city’s rich cafe culture and the potential for tourism beyond the traditional summer beach visits. The inclusion of Gangneung’s trekking courses and cultural spots in Kakao VX’s digital stamp tour app, All That Stamp, is a strategic move to enrich the tourist experience, highlighting the city’s appeal across all seasons and to a global audience.

Impact on Airline Tourism

The Gangneung Danoje Festival’s comprehensive approach to celebrating and promoting its cultural heritage is expected to have a profound impact on airline tourism. By showcasing the unique traditions, culinary experiences, and natural beauty of Gangneung, the festival not only attracts local visitors but also appeals to international tourists, encouraging them to explore the rich cultural tapestry of Korea. This influx of tourists is likely to boost demand for flights to Seoul, subsequently benefiting the airline industry and contributing to the regional economy. The festival serves as a catalyst for cultural exchange and tourism growth, underscoring the importance of preserving and sharing intangible cultural heritage on a global stage.
