The Greek island of Rhodes is experiencing its worst wildfire in history, driving thousands of tourists to flee their hotels in the midst of chaotic and horrifying scenes.

This inferno has been blazing between Rhodes and Corfu since Tuesday, one of a series of blazes throughout Greece during a lengthy heatwave. Greece is now in a state of emergency. If you are planned a vacation to Greece, you must either adjust your plans or cancel your trip.

So, beyond the renowned islands of Corfu and Rhodes, Greece, a place rich in history, myth, and breathtaking scenery, offers a treasure trove of locations. While these islands are charming in their own right, straying off the main route might lead to the discovery of lesser-known but as enchanting locations.

This historic nation has so much to offer beyond its famed tourist sites, from ancient ruins to lovely villages and gorgeous beaches.

Crete

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, offers a wide selection of activities. The Minoan Palace of Knossos is a must-see archaeological monument that dates back over 3,000 years and provides insight into the ancient Minoan civilisation. Stroll through the picturesque alleyways of Chania’s Old Town, with Venetian and Ottoman influences, or go down the Samaria Gorge, Europe’s longest and most magnificent canyon. The beautiful beaches and crystal-clear seas of Crete, such as Elafonissi and Balos, are ideal for leisure and water sports.

Meteora

Meteora, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a beautiful assemblage of rock formations capped by monasteries situated on high cliffs. These 14th-century monasteries were formerly only accessible by ladders and baskets, but now tourists may feel their mystical aura by ascending the granite stairs or enjoying guided tours. Meteora is a one-of-a-kind and memorable location because to its spectacular sights and tranquil ambiance.

Delphi

Delphi was formerly thought to be the centre of the world, where people went to seek the Oracle’s wisdom. It is now a spectacular archaeological site surrounded by mountains and overlooking the Gulf of Corinth. Explore the remains of the Temple of Apollo, the Ancient Theatre, and the Tholos, a circular building that has been carefully maintained. Delphi’s rich history and beautiful setting make it an intriguing trip for both history buffs and nature lovers.

Nafplio

With its Venetian architecture, small lanes, and stunning seafront, Nafplio is sometimes referred to be Greece’s most beautiful town. Explore the Palamidi Fortress, which is located high above the town, or stroll through the picturesque streets and take in the bustling cafés and boutique stores. Bourtzi, a little fortification on a rocky islet that may be accessed by boat, is a scenic sight. Nafplio’s combination of history, culture, and beach appeal makes it a perfect vacation destination.

Zagori

Zagori, a location in northern Greece’s Pindus Mountains, is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. The Vikos Gorge, one of the world’s deepest gorges, provides amazing hiking possibilities among breathtaking scenery. Discover classic stone-built towns like as Papigo and Monodendri, where you can sample great local cuisine and enjoy genuine Greek friendliness. Zagori’s unspoiled beauty provides a tranquil respite from the crowded tourist spots.

Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, Greece’s second-largest city, has a rich cultural legacy and a bustling environment. Explore the Roman Agora and the Rotunda, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, as well as the White Tower, the city’s famous emblem. Stroll along the scenic shoreline and take in the vibrant nightlife of the Ladadika neighbourhood. The combination of historical history, Ottoman influence, and modern energy makes Thessaloniki an intriguing destination.

The fascination of Greece stretches far beyond the well-known islands of Corfu and Rhodes. Every corner of this Mediterranean treasure, from historical glories to natural wonders, offers a unique and fulfilling experience. So, whether you seek ancient history, scenic beauty, or charming towns, Greece has something extraordinary waiting to be discovered. Set off on an adventure and let Greece’s hidden gems steal your heart and spirit.
