The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unveiled the “2024 FAA Data Challenge,” organized in collaboration with HeroX. This initiative seeks to engage university students in discovering the vast potentials within an information-driven National Airspace System (NAS). Students will employ artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and advanced analytics to address key issues related to aviation safety, efficiency, sustainability, and innovative applications within the NAS. This challenge represents a unique opportunity for emerging data scientists, engineers, and professionals from various fields to offer impactful solutions that could significantly influence the future of aviation. It emphasizes the need for a wide range of skills to fully leverage AI use cases.
“This Challenge is centered around using data more effectively to support the FAA’s mission of driving innovation through improved access to data,” says Marseta Dill, acting Chief Data Officer. “We want to reach those who will become the transportation leaders of tomorrow and invite them to participate.”
Regarding prizes, the challenge is structured into two phases with separate awards. In the first phase, up to ten finalists will each receive $1,000, plus an additional $8,000 stipend to cover travel expenses for participating in a Phase 2 live event. This event allows them to present their solutions directly to FAA officials and the larger aviation industry. The second phase will see a heightened level of competition, with a total prize pool of $90,000 to be distributed among the finalists based on their performance.
Eligibility for the competition and prizes is open to all students who are 18 years or older, whether participating individually or in teams. All participants must be U.S. citizens and currently enrolled in an American university. The challenge rules provide further details on eligibility requirements and any limitations.
