In February, Finnair transported 804,700 passengers, marking a 2.3% decrease from February 2023, despite the additional day in February 2024 due to the leap year. This decline was primarily attributed to a political strike during the first two days of the month, resulting in approximately 550 flight cancellations.

In February, Finnair transported 804,700 passengers, marking a 2.3% decrease from February 2023, despite the additional day in February 2024 due to the leap year. This decline was primarily attributed to a political strike during the first two days of the month, resulting in approximately 550 flight cancellations.

Despite the disruption caused by the strike, the overall capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), rose by 3.4% compared to the previous year. When factoring in wet lease outs, the capacity increased by 3.6%. However, Finnair’s traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs), decreased by 0.8%. This decrease led to a decline of 3.1 percentage points in the Passenger Load Factor (PLF), reaching 72.1%. Notably, the reported traffic figures do not consider longer routings due to airspace closures.

The increase in Asian traffic capacity by 10.6% year-on-year was primarily due to expanded capacity to Japan and South Korea. Conversely, North Atlantic capacity decreased by 10.9%. European traffic saw a 3.7% increase in ASKs, while Middle Eastern capacity declined by 6.3%, largely due to canceled flights to Israel. Domestic traffic ASKs increased by 0.9%.

RPKs increased by 2.3% in Asian traffic but decreased by 9.5% in the North Atlantic. European traffic experienced a 0.9% decrease, while Middle Eastern and domestic traffic decreased by 4.6% and 0.4%, respectively.

The Passenger Load Factor (PLF) varied across regions, with values of 70.4% in Asia, 60.4% in the North Atlantic, 75.5% in Europe, 79.5% in the Middle East, and 72.1% domestically.

While cargo tonnes increased by 10.3% year-on-year in February, driven by increased capacity in Asia and Europe, Revenue Cargo Tonne Kilometres rose by 9.8%.

Approximately 75.3% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule in February.

Traffic statistics for March 2024 will be available on April 5, 2024.
