Bay of Plenty is a region of New Zealand, after experiencing “two years of starvation”, the tourism operators over there have recently explained that reopening the borders is a step towards a secured future.
But, a ski field says that traffic light restrictions could still make the operation not possible.
Te Puia chief executive Tim Cossar found it “hugely encouraging, hugely positive” that from April 12, the borders will be opened once again to all vaccinated people coming from Australia.
From May 1st, further reopening for visa-waiver countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Japan and Singapore will be done, on Wednesday, the Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern announced the fact.
Cossar explained that it been “a real grind, particularly through the Omicron phase” and this will give a good lead-in the peak season 2023.
“It’s a step towards a more secure future, the last few years have been hell,” he said.
At the onset of March, Cossar told Stuff that the indecision in terms of reopening dates was making it “nigh on impossible” for tourism businesses to operate.
He also mentioned that the recent statement created a pathway back to what he has defined as “a new state of normal”.
Now, Te Puia could plan on things like bringing back their concert series, and that he expected a strong rebound from the Trans-Tasman market, though he admitted “people’s travel confidence will need to build up”.
He also stated that he expected to witness Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand returning soon, and that events in Europe could improve New Zealand’s position.
“They could spring back quite well, as long as there’s air capacity. That’s our pipeline. I couldn’t see why those markets won’t be back quickly.”
