The system is producing disorganised showers and thunderstorms. Strong upper-level winds are currently making conditions unfavourable for development.

However, as the disturbance moves west-northwestward across the central subtropical Atlantic, conditions are forecast to become more favourable for gradual organisation during the middle to latter part of the week.

The NHC places its formation chance at near zero during the next 48 hours and 30% during the next seven days.

There is no confirmed land impact at present, and the system has not become a tropical depression or named storm.

Bahamas Enters NOAA’s Longer-Range Atlantic Outlook

The Bahamas appears in a different type of official forecast.

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says unsettled weather across the western Atlantic near or north of the Bahamas could provide an opportunity for tropical or subtropical development.

This outlook covers 16–29 September 2026 and is designed to highlight broader areas where tropical cyclone development could become more favourable.

It does not mean a named storm has formed near the Bahamas. It also does not confirm that the islands will experience a tropical storm or hurricane.

NOAA says the Atlantic as a whole remains broadly unfavourable because of strong Pacific-related upper-level divergence and wind shear associated with El Niño.

Mexico Enters Focus as Eastern Pacific Remains More Active

Mexico provides the second major geographic travel angle.

NOAA says the Madden-Julian Oscillation could increase conditions favourable for tropical cyclone development closer to Mexico’s southern coast during Week 3.

The signal is in the eastern Pacific, not the Atlantic.

NOAA expects the Pacific to remain much more favourable for tropical cyclogenesis under the strong El Niño pattern. Its longer-range outlook indicates continued potential for eastern Pacific activity while the Atlantic remains comparatively suppressed.

Again, this is not a forecast of a storm striking Mexico. It identifies an environment where tropical cyclone formation may become more favourable.

El Niño Continues to Hold Back Atlantic Hurricanes

The biggest reason for the quiet Atlantic remains El Niño.

NOAA issued an El Niño Advisory on 10 September 2026 and said El Niño is strengthening. The Niño-3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly reached +1.8°C, while the Niño-3 region reached +2.5°C and Niño-1+2 reached +3.4°C.

NOAA now gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during the Northern Hemisphere autumn and winter of 2026–27.

El Niño generally increases vertical wind shear over the tropical Atlantic. Strong shear makes it harder for tropical systems to organise and maintain deep thunderstorms around their centres.

That influence led NOAA to reduce its Atlantic seasonal outlook in August.

NOAA Forecasts a Below-Normal 2026 Atlantic Season

NOAA now gives the Atlantic a 75% probability of a below-normal hurricane season, compared with only 20% for near-normal activity and 5% for an above-normal season.

The official forecast calls for:

  • 7–13 named storms
  • 2–6 hurricanes
  • 0–2 major hurricanes
  • ACE at 30%–90% of the long-term median

The 1991–2020 averages are approximately 14 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. NOAA also notes that August, September and October normally form the core of Atlantic hurricane activity.

A quieter season, however, does not remove the risk of a damaging storm.

US, Bahamas and Mexico Travellers Should Follow Official Forecasts

For travellers across the United States, Bahamas and Mexico, the current signals call for awareness rather than alarm.

No major land impact has been confirmed from the central Atlantic disturbance. The Bahamas signal remains a longer-range possibility, while the southern Mexico signal relates to potential eastern Pacific development later in the forecast period.

Travellers planning flights, cruises, resort stays or coastal road trips should check the National Hurricane Center and local government weather and emergency information before departure.

NOAA specifically warns that seasonal hurricane forecasts cannot predict where storms will make landfall. Even a below-normal season can produce a serious hurricane.
