George Bush Intercontinental Airport Unveils Latest Fuel Facility Project by Burns & McDonnell

This week, leaders from IAH Fuel, along with the consortium of airline partners at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and airport executives, celebrated the completion of the airport’s latest fuel facility, a project undertaken by Burns & McDonnell for the airlines.
This new facility signifies the culmination of an extensive fuel program that involved a sequence of strategic improvements and expansions. These efforts highlight a dedication to preserving top-tier infrastructure and promoting sustainable growth in the aviation sector.
“After investing in these critical upgrades and renovations, IAH Fuel has strengthened the airport’s position as a leading hub for air travel, facilitating the sustained growth of our airline partners and enhancing their ability to meet the needs of the traveling public,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports. “These strategic improvements not only bolster operational reliability and efficiency but also underscore IAH’s dedication to delivering a seamless passenger journey.”
The fuel program’s major improvements are outlined as follows:
- Expansion of Storage Capacity: The addition of two new above-ground jet fuel tanks has increased the storage capacity by 112,000 barrels (equivalent to 4.7 million gallons), enhancing the airport’s capacity to accommodate the growing demands of air traffic. Plans for the future installation of two more tanks have been proactively made, setting the stage for further expansion.
- Upgrades to the Hydrant Pump System: The system has seen significant upgrades, such as the installation of new into-hydrant pump pads and the creation of a bespoke power distribution center (PDC). The outdated programmable logic control system was also replaced with cutting-edge technology featuring variable frequency drives (VFDs), which has modernized the pump system’s control logic and improved operational efficiency.
- Renovations to Administration and Maintenance Buildings: With an emphasis on fostering a positive work environment, the fueling administrative building has undergone a 2,400-square-foot renovation, and the maintenance buildings have seen a 6,000-square-foot upgrade. These renovations include the addition of a specialized training room dedicated to the training of operations and maintenance staff.
