Approximately 650,000 foreign fans are anticipated to visit Germany for Euro 2024. This influx of visitors is projected to generate an additional €250 million ($271 million) in tourism revenue for the country.

Oliver Holtemöller from the Halle Institute for Economic Research commented on the economic impact of the event on Germany, suggesting that while a modest economic benefit is expected, a significant economic boost should not be anticipated. He added that the outcome of the tournament could potentially uplift the social mood in Germany, especially considering the current challenging economic climate marked by recession and minimal growth expectations.

Germany’s economy, which experienced a downturn last year, is currently facing difficulties, with the government projecting a modest growth rate of 0.2% in 2024. The Euro 2024 event, therefore, comes at a time when the country is seeking avenues to stimulate economic activity and improve the national mood.

The expected arrival of around 650,000 foreign fans for Euro 2024 in Germany represents a significant opportunity for the country’s tourism sector. The additional tourism revenue of €250 million highlights the considerable economic potential that such a large-scale international event holds for the host nation. Beyond the direct financial benefits, the influx of visitors will likely have a broader impact on local businesses, hospitality services, and entertainment industries, contributing to job creation and economic stimulation in various regions across Germany.

Moreover, the presence of a large number of international visitors could enhance Germany’s global image as a premier tourist destination and a capable host of major sporting events. This could have long-lasting effects on the country’s tourism industry, attracting more visitors in the future and fostering a positive international reputation.

Although a major economic push from Euro 2024 may not be anticipated, the potential for a more positive social mood driven by sporting success could indirectly benefit the economy. Increased consumer confidence and spending during and after the tournament could further support Germany’s economic recovery efforts, particularly in a period marked by recession and low growth forecasts.

In summary, Euro 2024 is set to not only offer a short-term boost in tourism revenue for Germany but also to contribute to the country’s economic and social revitalization during a challenging period.
