In a significant step towards economic diversification and tourism development, the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia has officially launched the Global City project in Dammam. This large-scale initiative, launched by the region’s Governor, Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, has the potential to revolutionise the local tourism industry by providing a world-class entertainment hub that will attract both regional and international visitors. The opening ceremony, held on Monday, was attended by high-profile dignitaries such as Fahad Al-Jubair, the Eastern Province Secretary, as well as a delegation of Thai officials and investors.
Global City is a groundbreaking tourism and entertainment development that covers an expansive 650,000 square metres of land, with the first phase occupying approximately 250,000 square metres. The project is not just a tourist attraction; it is a vital part of the region’s broader strategy to diversify its economy. By focusing on tourism, entertainment, and investment, it is expected to support the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 initiative, which aims to reduce Saudi Arabia’s reliance on oil and boost non-oil sectors, particularly tourism.
The Governor highlighted that Global City would play an essential role in strengthening tourism activity across the region. With its unique mix of entertainment options, cultural experiences, and international collaboration, the project is set to be a major attraction for both local and international investors. The initiative aligns with the Saudi government’s goals to make the Kingdom a premier global tourism destination.
Global City is designed to be a multicultural, multi-faceted destination that blends international culture with local traditions. The development will feature 15 international pavilions representing countries from various regions, including the Gulf, Asia, Europe, and Africa. These pavilions will bring a total of 16 participating countries, each showcasing its unique culture, traditions, and offerings, contributing to a vibrant global atmosphere within the project.
At the heart of Global City is a central artificial lake that spans around 200,000 square metres. This scenic feature will not only enhance the beauty of the landscape but also house a floating restaurant, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind dining experience. Additionally, the lake will be complemented by an open-air theatre capable of hosting 7,000 people, with the potential to expand to 10,000. The theatre will be used for live performances, concerts, and other large-scale events, making it a key feature of the entertainment offerings.
The first phase of Global City is set to be a hub for entertainment and cultural festivals. This phase includes the construction of 16 international pavilions, offering a global cultural experience with themed areas such as Chinatown and Indian Gully. Visitors will be able to explore carnival rides, arcade games, live performances, and a petting zoo. The Garden of Lights is another key feature of this phase, offering visitors a magical experience with its stunning light displays and peaceful environment.

Furthermore, the first phase will introduce a variety of dining options, with 11 restaurants serving cuisines from around the world. The inclusion of diverse restaurants will ensure that visitors can experience different culinary traditions while enjoying the entertainment offerings. In addition, the development will feature pedestrian walkways and markets that will enhance the overall visitor experience, allowing for a leisurely exploration of the various attractions and cultural pavilions.
The second phase of Global City is expected to significantly expand its offerings with the introduction of new pavilions and stunt areas, as well as additional restaurants. A major highlight of this phase will be the opening of a state-of-the-art water park. The water park will feature slides, wave pools, and lazy rivers, ensuring that visitors of all ages can enjoy a fun and refreshing experience. With its variety of attractions, this phase will cater to both adventure seekers and families, reinforcing Global City’s status as a must-visit destination in Saudi Arabia.
Looking ahead, the third phase of the Global City project will focus on creating a residential neighbourhood that supports the long-term sustainability of the development. The addition of residential areas will help to ensure that Global City is not just a seasonal attraction but a permanent fixture in the region’s tourism and economic landscape. By offering residential spaces, the development will also contribute to the creation of jobs and promote a sense of community within the project. This phase will play a critical role in turning Global City into a self-sustaining hub for both tourists and residents.
The opening of Global City is expected to have a significant economic impact on Dammam and the wider Eastern Province. With the development set to attract up to 25,000 visitors per day, it is anticipated to generate substantial revenue for the local economy, particularly through tourism and retail sales. In addition to tourism, the project is expected to create job opportunities in various sectors, including hospitality, retail, entertainment, and construction. The influx of visitors and investments will undoubtedly contribute to the region’s overall economic growth.
Furthermore, the creation of a global entertainment and tourism hub in Dammam will position the city as a key player in the Middle East’s tourism sector. The project will likely draw visitors not only from Saudi Arabia but also from neighbouring Gulf countries, Asia, Europe, and Africa. With its wide range of attractions and international appeal, Global City is set to become one of the region’s premier destinations, drawing international investment and boosting tourism in the process.
Global City is a significant step forward for tourism in Saudi Arabia, and its successful completion will undoubtedly boost the country’s reputation as a global tourism hub. Global City, with its cultural diversity, world-class entertainment, and commitment to sustainability, will be critical to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and goal of becoming a top global tourism destination. As the project progresses, it will continue to shape the region’s economic future and attract a diverse range of visitors from around the world.
