In a move set to revolutionize travel connectivity in Chennai, plans for the city’s second airport at Parandur include the introduction of two metro stations. Revealed through a map by Tidco, these stations are strategically positioned—one near the city and the other adjacent to the passenger terminals—to facilitate easy access for travelers. This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the city’s infrastructure and bolstering its status as a travel hub.

The proposed metro line, stretching 43.63 kilometers from Poonamallee to Parandur and featuring 19 stations, aims to streamline the journey to the airport from the south. It will align with the upcoming Chennai-Bengaluru expressway, ensuring a seamless transition to the airport vicinity, with one station planned near a multi-story parking area. This development is anticipated to significantly improve the travel experience for passengers, reducing transit times and providing a direct link to the airport.

A comprehensive feasibility study, detailing the project with an estimated budget of Rs 10,712 crore, was presented to the state government in January. The line will serve various key locations, including industrial areas and townships, before concluding at the Parandur airport. The proposal suggests spacing the stations further apart than those within the city to enable higher train speeds, thus shortening travel times to the airport. This extension is part of the broader Lighthouse-Poonamallee Bypass corridor, expected to commence operations by the end of 2025, promising city-wide metro accessibility to the new airport.

Upon completion, expected by 2029, the first phase of Parandur airport will feature essential facilities, including a runway and terminals. This metro link will not only facilitate a smoother transfer for passengers between the city’s two airports but also has the potential to attract more international flights due to the new airport’s enhanced capabilities. As a result, domestic travelers landing at Meenambakkam will have the convenience of transferring to Parandur for international departures, further cementing Chennai’s position in the global travel and tourism industry.
