The performers are out, the hotels are full, archaeological sites are crowded, shopkeepers are happy, and tables are almost full booked in any decent restaurant. This is what Athens is witnessing all over again!
In April itself, Athens is abuzz with the sound of tourists. Stelios Ballas in his 50s, can hardlyremember so many touristsvisiting the scattered antiquities of the Roman agora.
Ballassaid, “These past few weeks have been something else. I talk to some of them and they seem to be from everywhere. The thing is, do they have money and are they willing to spend it?”
Not since 2019, when Greece witnessed a record 33 million holidaymakers, has business been thisdecent.
For a country heavily dependent on tourism – the sector accounts for 25% of Greece’s economic output, generating one in four jobs – the comeback has surprised even those who have beenhopeful.
