Gusty rain brings travel chaos in Glasgow

Torrential rain has caused travel chaos for commuters in Glasgow, with trains suspended due to flooding in the Crossmyloof area in the city’s Southside.

The downpour comes after the city experienced a heatwave for days with temperatures soaring into the high 20s. Those travelling to East Kilbride, Barrhead, and Kilmarnock have been told their trains are suspended until further notice on safety grounds.

 In a statement, ScotRail said, “We have received reports of flooding in the Crossmyloof area. For safety reasons, trains to and from East Kilbride, Barrhead and Kilmarnock will be suspended until further notice.”

The suspension has left rush-hour commuters stranded, causing significant inconvenience for those affected. The situation has brought into sharp focus the vulnerability of transport infrastructure during extreme weather events, particularly in urban areas where drainage systems may be overwhelmed.

The incident also highlights the importance of investing in robust and resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding the effects of climate change.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in the area, with the potential for further disruption to travel and local services.
