Hainan Airlines introduces AR glasses for onboard entertainment

Hainan Airlines has recently initiated a unique service on select routes, allowing passengers to utilize Rokid’s augmented reality (AR) glasses at no extra charge for in-flight entertainment, a move announced by the tech startup on Thursday. This innovation marks the first time augmented reality technology has been made available for in-flight entertainment on certain flights.

Reports indicate that passengers on Hainan Airlines’ flight HU7874, traveling from Shenzhen to Xi’an, were provided with Rokid AR glasses. These glasses offered an immersive experience, enabling passengers to watch three-dimensional movies offline on what appeared to be a 360-inch borderless screen, boasting a refresh rate of 120 hertz and a resolution of 1,080 pixels, as disclosed by the Hangzhou-based startup.

Weighing merely 75 grams, these glasses feature a battery life that extends up to 5 hours and come equipped with dual directional speakers. This design ensures that users can enjoy a high-quality audio experience without causing disturbance to fellow passengers, as emphasized by Rokid.

In light of the ongoing advancements in technology infrastructure, such as 5G networks and cloud computing, Rokid has expressed intentions to broaden the application of its AR technology within the aviation sector. The company has outlined potential future enhancements, including the incorporation of real-time interactive games and virtual tours into its in-flight offerings.

The AR in-flight entertainment experience is slated to span over a month and will be featured on more than 20 Hainan Airlines flights. This initiative is part of a celebration for the upcoming lunar new year, showcasing a special selection of five of the latest movies related to the Chinese New Year.

This pioneering venture not only enhances the passenger experience on Hainan Airlines but also has the potential to significantly impact tourism. By offering an innovative and immersive in-flight entertainment option, Hainan Airlines could attract more travellers seeking unique experiences during their flights.
