In May 2024, Helsinki will host the prestigious MICHELIN Guide Nordic Ceremony, spotlighting the region’s top culinary talents and venues.

In May 2024, Helsinki will be the proud host of the prestigious Nordic Countries Ceremony of the MICHELIN Guide, a hallmark event in the culinary world. This ceremony, set to unveil the latest Nordic dining establishments to receive the esteemed MICHELIN Stars, marks Helsinki’s continued prominence in the global food industry. This year’s ceremony, the second consecutive one held in Finland, will turn the spotlight on both Helsinki’s vibrant food scene and the country’s diverse gastronomic offerings.

The ceremony is scheduled for May 27, 2024, at the iconic Savoy Theatre and the Helsinki City Hall. It’s not just the MICHELIN Stars that are at stake; the ceremony also celebrates sustainability in gastronomy with the MICHELIN Green Star and other distinguished awards.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides, expressed excitement about bringing the annual Nordic Ceremony to Helsinki for the first time. He commended Helsinki as Finland’s culinary epicenter and the ideal setting for gathering the Nordic region’s culinary elite. The event, supported by the City of Helsinki and Business Finland/Visit Finland, promises to be a fitting tribute to the talent and excellence of the region’s chefs and restaurants.

Helsinki seizes this opportunity to showcase its unique culinary heritage and diverse food culture. Organized jointly by the city, the MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries, and Visit Finland, the event is expected to draw numerous industry professionals and global media.

Mayor of Helsinki, Juhana Vartiainen, expressed pride in hosting such a renowned event, highlighting Helsinki’s rich food culture, ranging from high-end dining to local specialties like berries and seafood. He hopes the event will be accessible and enjoyable for the city’s residents.

Kristiina Hietasaari, Senior Director of Visit Finland, emphasized the increasing role of food as a key factor in tourism. She pointed out that while Finland offers exceptional culinary experiences, its gastronomic culture is still relatively undiscovered globally. The ceremony in Helsinki will significantly aid in boosting Finland’s profile as a top food tourism destination.

Helsinki’s gastronomic calendar will be especially vibrant this year, with the MICHELIN Guide event serving as a centerpiece. The city is encouraging collaboration among local restaurateurs, entrepreneurs, and associations to create a range of culinary events and experiences for both locals and tourists.

Marja-Leena Rinkineva, Economic Development Director for the City of Helsinki, sees the unveiling of the MICHELIN Guide’s new Nordic restaurant selection as an excellent platform for local culinary talents to showcase their creativity and unique offerings. She notes Helsinki’s food scene is characterized by its boldness in blending diverse influences to create extraordinary culinary experiences. Food, she asserts, is a vital part of Helsinki’s allure and a key focus for the city in the coming year.

The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries is a testament to exceptional dining across Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. The 2023 edition listed 271 restaurants, with 81 receiving one or more MICHELIN Stars. Helsinki is home to five of Finland’s MICHELIN-Starred restaurants, with others located in Turku and Porvoo. The guide also honors restaurants that excel in sustainable and environmentally friendly dining, with three Helsinki restaurants currently holding the MICHELIN Green Star.
