Historic steam locomotive to pass through Lancashire-Yorkshire this Saturday

The iconic steam locomotive 34067 Tangmere is set to make a memorable journey through Yorkshire and Lancashire this coming Saturday, as part of a special Pathfinder Tours trip to Carlisle. This weekend marks the locomotive’s return to the mainline, providing railway enthusiasts and tourists alike with a unique opportunity to witness a piece of railway history in motion.

The journey is scheduled to begin early in the morning from Bristol Temple Meads, with the train initially being pulled by a diesel locomotive. Departing at 05:30, it will traverse various locations, including Bristol Parkway, Cam and Dursley, Cheltenham Spa, Worcestershire Parkway, Birmingham New Street, Stafford, Crewe, and Preston, before reaching Carnforth North Junction. It is at this junction that the steam locomotive Tangmere will be coupled to the train, marking the start of its stint leading the journey.

Once Tangmere takes over, the train is set to pass through picturesque locations such as Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith North Lakes, finally arriving in Carlisle at around midday. After allowing passengers some time to explore Carlisle, the train will embark on its return journey in the afternoon, passing through Appleby, Garsdale, Ribblehead, Clitheroe, Blackburn, and back to Preston.

At this point, Tangmere will be replaced once again by diesel locomotives for the return leg of the journey to Bristol Temple Meads, retracing its outbound route through Crewe, Stafford, Birmingham New Street, Worcestershire Parkway, Cheltenham Spa, Cam and Dursley, Bristol Parkway, and concluding at Bristol Temple Meads by late evening.

This event is anticipated to significantly impact railway tourism, offering a rare chance for spectators and passengers to experience the majesty and nostalgia of steam-powered travel. The presence of 34067 Tangmere, a locomotive steeped in history, traversing the picturesque landscapes of Yorkshire and Lancashire, is expected to draw crowds along the route, boosting local tourism and spotlighting the enduring allure of heritage rail journeys.
