Today, on February 28th, Dr. Pang Yiu-kai, Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), expressed gratitude towards the Government for allocating HK$665 million to support HKTB’s efforts in the 2024/25 fiscal year. Additionally, he appreciated the assurance of continued support with resources earmarked for the subsequent fiscal years of 2025/26 and 2026/27, ensuring sustained backing for HKTB’s initiatives.
Dr Pang said, “The Hong Kong tourism industry has exceptional prospects. The HKTB will continue to closely monitor the evolving situations in various markets and react nimbly. We will make the best possible use of the resources allocated by the Government to maximise the contribution of the tourism industry to Hong Kong’s economy. We will adopt four key strategies to reinforce the city’s status as one of the world’s top visitor destinations,” Dr Pang explained. “First, we will continue to develop diverse tourism experiences. Secondly, we will organise and support mega events throughout the year. Thirdly, we will step up promotions in visitor source makets. And finally, we will continue to join hands with the industry to enhance the capacity to receive visitors, to launch a new promotional campaign to encourage the trade and the public to be good hosts, and to enhance service qualities so that we offer every visitor the best possible experience.”
The Budget has designated a total of HK$971 million to fuel tourism development by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) over the span of three years, encompassing 2024/25, 2025/26, and 2026/27. Of this, HK$665 million has been earmarked for the fiscal year 2024/25. The HKTB has outlined four strategic priorities for the forthcoming years:
Cultivating diverse tourism experiences (HK$389 million), involving:
A total of HK$354 million allocated for the revamp of “A Symphony of Lights” over the next three years (HK$115 million designated for 2024/25).
Continued promotion of “Hong Kong Neighbourhoods,” city walks, outdoor activities, outlying island tours, and other immersive experiences.
Hosting and supporting large-scale international events (HK$304 million), including:
Allocation of HK$100 million for a coordination group dedicated to supporting and promoting mega-events over the next three years (HK$33 million allocated for 2024/25).
Organization of HKTB events and assistance for large-scale international events within the city.
Expanding diverse visitor source markets and intensifying promotional efforts (HK$176 million), which involves:
Continuous promotional activities in various visitor source markets and their enhancement.
Launching promotions in cities recently incorporated into the Individual Visit Scheme, specifically Xi’an and Qingdao.
Elevating service standards and providing consistent support to the travel industry (HK$102 million), which includes:
Introduction of new promotional initiatives to encourage the travel industry and the public to excel in hospitality.
Enhancement of products and services targeting potential visitor segments such as the Muslim community.
Comprehensive information regarding the strategic priorities will be disclosed shortly. Additionally, the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is presently preparing for the monthly pyrotechnics and drone shows mentioned in the Budget speech. The initial concept aims to showcase Hong Kong’s distinctive characteristics through various themes and designs, which will be regularly refreshed. Additional information will be disclosed at a later time.
Furthermore, the HKTB will maintain close collaboration with stakeholders in the tourism industry and related sectors to bolster promotional and marketing endeavors. This collaborative effort aims to attract more visitors to the city and reinforce Hong Kong’s position as a premier global tourism destination.
