Houston Airports has named Kelly Woodward as its Chief Operating Officer (COO), marking her as the first female to hold this position in the organization’s history. With a wealth of aviation management experience spanning more than twenty years, Woodward steps into her new role effective Monday, March 18.

In her capacity as COO, Woodward will spearhead the execution of strategic initiatives across Houston Airports, with a focus on maintaining a 5-Star system performance at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). She will prioritize enhancing operational efficiency within divisions, fostering collaboration with airport stakeholders, and upholding operational excellence throughout the organization, which encompasses Ellington Airport (EFD) and the Houston Spaceport.

Woodward’s most recent role was as Managing Director at AvAirPros in Houston, where she oversaw operational readiness, terminal systems integration, and teams responsible for the smooth functioning of baggage handling systems at IAH Terminal B Transformation.

Prior to her current appointment, Woodward served Houston Airports in various leadership capacities from 2002 to 2023. During this tenure, she held roles in Operations, Contract Services, Custodial Services, and served as Interim General Manager of Bush Airport. Most recently, she held the position of Assistant Director of the Operational Readiness Division.

“Kelly Woodward’s wealth of experience and leadership skills make her the perfect fit for the role of Chief Operating Officer. We are excited to have her back on the Houston Airports team. I have full confidence in her ability to drive our strategic initiatives forward,” said Jim Szczesniak, Director of Aviation for Houston Airports.

In a historically male-dominated aviation industry, Woodward’s appointment as Houston Airports’ first female COO signifies strides toward gender diversity. Despite women remaining a minority in aviation leadership roles, Woodward’s achievement stands as an inspiration for aspiring women in the field.

With a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Woodward also holds an FAA Commercial Pilot/Flight Instructor Certificate and is a Certified Member of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE).

The Houston Airport System urges the community and aviation enthusiasts to support Woodward as she steps into her new role. Her appointment signifies a crucial moment for Houston Airports, highlighting the aviation industry’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity. As we strive to achieve our vision of becoming a premier 5-Star global air service gateway, Woodward’s leadership will play a pivotal role in maintaining operational excellence.

“Diversity is the heartbeat of innovation. It is an honor to work alongside a talented team where our collective strengths propel Houston Airports to new heights,” said Kelly Woodward, Chief Operating Officer for Houston Airports. “I’m excited, humbled and honored to return to Houston Airports under the leadership of Director Szczesniak. Together, our priority is ensuring our airports provide a clean, safe and intuitive guest experience. From world-class amenities to mitigating traffic, my focus as COO is delivering a functional and efficient experience from curb to gate.”

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Woodward fulfills the roles of a devoted wife and mother to three children. During her leisure hours, she finds joy in reading, exploring new destinations, and cherishing moments with loved ones.
