Booking.com has launched its new Travel Happiness Index, a research report that examines the emotional, financial and social elements influencing travel decisions during a period of increasing global uncertainty. Based on responses from 10,000 travellers across 10 Asia-Pacific markets, including India, the first edition of the index explores the key factors that transform ordinary trips into memorable, comfortable and rewarding experiences.

The report analyses two major aspects of traveller behaviour: the elements people consider important for a satisfying journey and the priorities they choose when they need to make compromises. By studying both perspectives, the index highlights that travel happiness is not only created by exciting destinations and experiences but also by confidence, convenience, flexibility and the sense of security that travellers need throughout their journey.

Travel Happiness Starts Before the Journey Begins for Indian Travellers

For Indian travellers, the excitement of travel begins well before they leave home. The research shows that travel continues to hold a strong emotional value, with 99% of Indian respondents associating travel with positive emotions. Many travellers also see holidays and getaways as an important part of maintaining their mental and emotional well-being.

The anticipation of an upcoming trip has become a powerful source of happiness. Around 90% of Indian travellers say having a journey planned gives them something positive to look forward to, while 77% believe this anticipation helps them manage everyday pressures and responsibilities.

However, modern travel also brings challenges. While journeys create excitement and relaxation, some travellers experience stress linked to planning, expectations and practical concerns. According to the report, 29% of Indian travellers feel tired after trips, 24% feel pressure to maximise every moment of their holiday, while 22% experience uncertainty and 20% feel anxious during travel.

As travellers balance their desire for memorable experiences with concerns about cost, organisation and convenience, stress-free travel has become just as important as the destination itself.

The report reveals that Indian travellers are increasingly using careful preparation to create smoother experiences:

Indian Travellers Shift Focus Towards Meaningful Experiences and Simple Joys

The definition of a successful holiday is changing among Indian travellers. Instead of focusing only on famous attractions or tightly packed schedules, many are finding happiness through simple moments, deeper connections and authentic experiences.

The Travel Happiness Index shows that appreciating natural surroundings (26%), enjoying quality time with travel companions (28%) and experiencing good food and drinks (16%) are among the moments that contribute most to overall trip satisfaction.

Connection remains at the centre of travel happiness. Whether it involves spending time with family, meeting local communities or discovering new cultures, relationships and shared experiences are becoming increasingly valuable. Family travel holds particular importance, with 68% of Indian travellers saying trips with family create their most enjoyable travel memories.

These changing priorities are influencing how Indian travellers plan and spend on holidays. More travellers are focusing on value, authenticity and experiences rather than simply visiting popular destinations.

Key trends highlighted in the research include:

Global Uncertainty Creates Challenges but Indian Travellers Remain Determined

Although travellers worldwide face rising concerns, uncertainty has not reduced the desire to explore. Indian travellers continue to show strong resilience despite worries related to extreme weather conditions, health risks, safety concerns, rising prices and political instability.

The report identifies several major concerns affecting travel decisions:

Despite these challenges, most Indian travellers remain committed to travelling by making smarter choices and adjusting their plans. Affordability continues to influence decisions, but travellers are becoming more confident in managing travel expenses, with 70% saying they feel more capable of financing trips compared with the past.

Adaptability has become a defining characteristic of modern travellers. Instead of canceling journeys completely when challenges arise, most travellers prefer finding alternatives. The research reveals that 96% of Indian travellers are willing to modify their travel plans rather than abandon them.

Among those adapting their plans:

This flexibility demonstrates that travel remains a priority, even when external conditions create uncertainty.

Technology and Trust Are Transforming the Way Indians Plan Travel

Technology has become a crucial part of the modern travel experience, helping travellers discover destinations, compare options and make confident decisions. The Travel Happiness Index highlights the growing role of digital platforms in reducing stress and improving convenience.

According to the findings, 84% of Indian travellers believe digital tools make travel planning and booking easier.

The research further reveals:

As travellers increasingly depend on technology to simplify decision-making, platforms that combine inspiration, reliable information, flexible options and seamless booking experiences are expected to play a bigger role in shaping future travel.

The Travel Happiness Index highlights that the future of travel is not defined only by where people go, but by how confidently and comfortably they experience the journey. For Indian travellers, happiness comes from a combination of emotional connection, thoughtful planning, meaningful experiences and the reassurance that every step of the journey is supported.

Santosh Kumar, Regional Head,  South Asia at Booking.com said, “Travel is increasingly becoming more than just a break from routine, it is an investment in well-being, relationships and personal enrichment. Our inaugural Travel Happiness Index shows that Indian travellers are planning their trips more thoughtfully, seeking authentic local experiences and finding ways to make their trip feel more worthwhile. What’s particularly encouraging is their resilience, rather than putting their plans on hold during uncertainty, most are choosing to adapt and make the most of their trips. As part of our mission to make it easier for everyone to experience the world, we’re focused on helping travellers book and plan with confidence, so they can focus less on friction and more on the experiences that make travel truly worthwhile.”
