The January 2024 global passenger demand data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) depicts a robust commencement to the year.
“2024 is off to a strong start despite economic and geopolitical uncertainties. As governments look to build prosperity in their economies in the busiest election-year ever, it is critical that they see aviation as a catalyst for growth. Increased taxes and onerous regulation are a counterweight to prosperity. We will be looking to governments for policies that help aviation to reduce costs, improve efficiency and make progress towards net zero CO2 emissions by 2050,” said Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General.

Regional Breakdown – International Passenger Markets
In January 2024, Asia-Pacific airlines experienced a remarkable 45.4% surge in traffic compared to January 2023, signifying the region’s swift recovery following the relaxation of pandemic restrictions. Capacity also saw a notable climb of 48.1%, while the load factor declined by 1.5 percentage points to 82.6%. This exceptional growth can largely be attributed to China, which began lifting COVID-19 travel restrictions in January 2023. Although major international routes to and from Asia-Pacific are still in the process of recovery, routes such as Asia-Middle East have already surpassed pre-pandemic levels.
European carriers witnessed a solid 10.8% increase in January 2024 traffic compared to the same period in 2023. Capacity rose by 10.7%, with a marginal uptick of 0.1 percentage points in the load factor to 77.3%. Notably, routes between Europe and North America have shown a robust rebound from the pandemic, standing 6.5% higher than in January 2020.
Middle Eastern airlines reported a notable 16.2% rise in January 2024 traffic compared to the previous year. Capacity increased by 15.7%, and the load factor saw a slight climb of 0.4 percentage points to 79.9%.
North American carriers experienced a 12.3% traffic increase in January 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Capacity also saw a rise of 13.7%, albeit with a 1.0 percentage point decline in the load factor to 79.4%.
Latin American airlines witnessed a significant 17.9% traffic rise in January 2024 compared to the corresponding month in 2023. January capacity surged by 13.2%, driving the load factor up by 3.4 percentage points to 86%, the highest among all regions.
African airlines observed an 18.5% increase in traffic in January 2024 compared to the previous year. January capacity rose by 19.2%, resulting in a slight decline of 0.4 percentage points in the load factor to 73.3%, the lowest among all regions.
Domestic Markets
The growth in domestic demand remains driven by China, where there was robust demand for Lunar New Year travel, likely boosting traffic in February as well. Chinese carriers responded by increasing capacity, particularly through the deployment of wide-body jets.
