The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has officially opened nominations for the esteemed 2024 Diversity and Inclusion Awards. This initiative, now in its fifth year, aims to spotlight and celebrate significant achievements in fostering diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry. Stakeholders across the sector are invited to submit nominations by the 17th of April, 2024, in anticipation of recognizing the unparalleled efforts that contribute to a more inclusive aviation environment.

Categories of Recognition

The awards are segmented into three distinct categories, each designed to honor different aspects of diversity and inclusion within the air transport industry:

The Inspirational Role Model Award targets senior female professionals who have notably influenced the aviation agenda through significant contributions to business and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.

The High Flyer Award is dedicated to recognizing the achievements of women under 40 in the aviation industry, who have demonstrated leadership and made a positive impact in championing diversity and inclusion.

The Diversity & Inclusion Team Award celebrates an IATA member airline that has achieved measurable success in enhancing diversity and inclusion within its operations.

A Global Call to Action

Willie Walsh, IATA’s Director General, highlighted the aviation industry’s adaptability and progress in improving gender balance and diversity. He encouraged professionals actively engaged in these initiatives to nominate themselves or their peers, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the hard work being dedicated to these causes.

Rewarding Excellence

Each winner will be granted $25,000, courtesy of Qatar Airways, to either support their own diversity and inclusion activities or donate to a related charity. This gesture underlines the significance of these awards in promoting a diverse and inclusive culture within the global aviation community.

Antonio Schulthess, Chief People Officer at Qatar Airways, commended the aviation sector’s diversity, reflecting on the airline’s commitment to fostering a multicultural and multifaceted workforce, with a particular focus on gender diversity.

Future-Oriented Approach

The Diversity & Inclusion Awards, alongside IATA’s 25by2025 Best Practice guide, are instrumental in guiding aviation organizations towards embedding diversity and inclusion into their core strategies. This aligns with broader Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) and Corporate Social Responsibility and Disclosure (CSRD) frameworks, underscoring the industry’s commitment to creating more equitable and inclusive work environments.

As the nomination period unfolds, the aviation community eagerly anticipates the unveiling of this year’s winners at the IATA Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit in Dubai, celebrating the strides made towards a more inclusive industry.
