After a disturbing monsoon, for the tourism industry of Himachal Pradesh, the long weekend has come as a major respite. All Shimla and Manali hotels witnessed an uptick in occupancy. These were the hardest hit among tourist towns in Himachal. As Shimla experienced 60% occupancy, hotels in Manali during the three-day holiday period was reported 40% occupancy.
With the improvement in weather, the state government restarted the services related to Volvo bus to Manali just four days back. This decision has proved to be a huge support for hotel owners. Mr. Mukesh Thakur, Manali hotelier, said that after the ravaged caused by flood in Manali, in July and August, their expectations of tourism stimulation were damaged. They thought that it would take several months to see a good recovery as tourists had started opting for Kashmir. However, at present, the footfall is slowly growing.
A taxi driver in Manali, Sachin Kumar, said that flood reverberated the sentiment, saying that it’s good for all that tourists are slowly coming back to Manali. There were 60 Volvo buses in Manali on Sunday, he added.
Record rainfall caused destruction in the state in July and August, causing flash floods, landslides, and impairment to property.
