Within India, the state of Karnataka appears to be the greatest beneficiary in terms of revenge tourism. The state, in the last seven months recorded a number of 28 crore tourists from other states and 3 lakh tourists from abroad alone.

In 2022, there’s a major increase of 64% from 18.5 crore local tourists and 1.3 lakh tourists from abroad which is close to 10.5% of the total footfall of tourists in India.

The majority of tourists liked destinations with resorts and homestays, during the pandemic situation, as social distancing was crucial at that time, said an official of the tourism department. However, once restrictions were raised, people were not quite anxious about visiting crowded places. The state of Karnataka is one of the biggest recipients of this.

According to the data, most visitors have visited religious places, followed by beaches and heritage sites. Tourists from abroad are more and more preferring the coastal sites of Karnataka due to congestion of famous beachside places in Kerala and Goa, said tourism consultant.

People mostly visit locations like Gokarna, Sasihithlu beaches and Udupi. Among spiritual sites for the tourists, places with highest footfalls were recorded at Belagavi), Hosadurga and Chamundeshwari Hills. Hampi attracted the most followed by Bangalore and Mysuru palaces.
